Hem Barua is one of the famous Assamese Poet and also a good politician of Assam. He has written many famous and popular poems and books. He was also the president of Assam Sahitya Sabha in the year 1972 and also awarded many prestigious awards for his written poems and books.
He was born on 22nd April 1915 at Tezpur of Assam. He was a brilliant student in his school and college career. Hem Barua obtained his M.A. degree from Calcutta University in 1938. After completion of his Masters degree he joined as a English Lecture in J.B. College of Jorhat, Assam in the year 1941. But after only one year he left his service and joined in the "Quit India Movement" for which he was imprisoned in the year 1943. After getting free from prison, he joined the B. Barua College, Guwahati, and later became its Principal.
In the year 1948 the famous Personality of Assam Hem Barua left the Congress and joined as a new member of Socialist party. Then he was elected as the National Executive of "Praja Socialist Party". He was also elected for Lok Sabha from Guwahati for several times, such as in the year 1957, 1962 and also in the year 1967. He was also in the same post till December 1970. So he was a political leader of Assam. The role of Hem Barua as a Parliamentarian was lauded and his contributions acknowledged.
Hem Barua fought for the region and he raised several issues of importance in the Parliament. Despite being in the Opposition, he was sought out by the then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru for his opinion. Nehru used to often invite him for breakfast meetings.
Hem Barua, who was initially with the Congress, left it in 1948 to join the Socialist party. Later, he was elected to the national executive of the Praja Socialist Party. He was elected to the Lok Sabha from Guwahati seat in 1957 and 1962 and from Mangaldoi in 1967. He was the member of the Parliament till December, 1970.
Hem Barua was the author of several books. He became the President of the Assam Sahitya Sabha in its annual session held at Dhubri in 1972 and was regarded as one of the pioneers of modern literary movement in Assam. Here are list of few of his writings:
