FIFA drops plans to expand Qatar World cup 2022 to 48 teams

FIFA has dropped the plan to include a total of 48 teams at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

The 2022 edition will remain as originally planned with 32 teams.

The expansion proposal was proposed and pressed by FIFA’s president, Gianni Infantino.

In January 2017, FIFA voted unanimously in favour of increasing the World Cup to 48 teams for the 2026event - which will be held in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

This will be the first World Cup ever to be held in the Arab world and the first in a Muslim-majority country.

The reigning World Cup champions are France.
