Finance Minister announced Jal Jeevan Mission (Urban) during Budget speech. The Finance Minister also announced that Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban) 2.0 launched under the “Health and Wellbeing”vertical.

Jal Jeevan Mission (Urban)

Jal Jeevan Mission (Urban) has been designed to provide universal coverage of water supply to all households through functional taps in all 4,378 statutory towns in accordance with SDG Goal- 6.

Aim of Jal Jeevan Mission (Urban)

The Aim of Jal Jeevan Mission (Urban) is to create universal coverage of water supply in all 4,378 statutory towns as well as sewage management in 500 AMRUT cities. The Jal Jeevan Mission (Urban) aims to create universal coverage of water supply in all 4,378 statutory towns as well as sewage management in 500 AMRUT cities.

Salient features of Jal Jeevan Mission (Urban)

  • The total outlay proposed for JJM(U) is Rs 2,87,000 crore which includes Rs10,000 crore for continuing financial support to AMRUT Mission.
  • In order to promote Public private partnership, it has been mandated for cities having million plus population to take up PPP projects worth minimum of 10 percent of their total project fund allocation.
  • For Union Territories, there will be 100% central funding. For North Eastern and Hill States, central funding for projects will be 90%. Central funding will be 50% for cities will less than 1 lakh population, one third for cities with 1 lakh to 10 lakh population and 25% for cities with million plus population.
  • Mission will be monitored through a technology-based platform on which beneficiary response will be monitored along with progress and output-outcome.
  • Funding from Government for projects will be in three tranches of 20:40:40. Third instalment onwards will be released based on outcomes achieved and credible exclusion will be exercised while funding.

Swachh Bharat Mission Urban 2.0

Finance Minister of India announced that Swachh Bharat Mission (Urban) 2.0 launched under the “Health and Wellbeing”vertical. Swachh Bharat Mission was launched in 2014 by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. The focus of the mission was to make urban India open defecation free (ODF). As well as, 100% scientific solid waste management.

Aim of Swachh Bharat Mission Urban

The Swachh Bharat Mission Urban aims at making urban India free from open defecation and achieving 100% scientific management of municipal solid waste in 4,041 statutory towns in the country.

Objectives of Swachh Bharat Mission Urban

The objectives of the Swachh Bharat Mission Urban are

  • Elimination of open defecation
  • Eradication of Manual Scavenging
  • Modern and Scientific Municipal Solid Waste Management
  • To effect behavioral change regarding healthy sanitation practices
  • Generate awareness about sanitation and its linkage with public health
  • Capacity Augmentation for ULBs to create an enabling environment for private sector participation in Capex (capital expenditure) and Opex (operation and maintenance).
