NITI Aayog’s “Governing Council” reconstituted

The Union Territory of Ladakh has been included in the governing council of the NITI Aayog for the first time. The reconstitution was done at the initiative of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

About Niti Aayog

  • NITI Aayog is the premier policy ‘Think Tank’ of the Government of India, providing both directional and policy inputs. While designing strategic and long term policies and programmes for the Government of India, NITI Aayog also provides relevant technical advice to the Centre and States.
  • National Institution for Transforming India also called NITI Aayog was formed through cabinet resolution in 2015. It had replaced the erstwhile Planning Commission.

Purpose of NITI Aayog

The key objective of NITI Aayog is to usher in a transparent and accountable system of governance through a continual process of consultation, dialogue, and on-the-ground experiments. The Government of India, in keeping with its reform agenda, constituted the NITI Aayog to replace the Planning Commission instituted in 1950.

NITI Aayog’s Governing Council

  • NITI Aayog is a Government Institution with a mandate to proffer solutions and adopt best practices.
  • It is the premier body tasked with a shared vision of national development priorities, sectors and strategies with the active involvement of States.
  • The governing council presents a platform to discuss inter-sectoral, inter-departmental and federal issues.
  • NITI Aayog is charged with the responsibility for accelerating economic growth in India by facilitating an ecosystem for policy formulation and advocacy, laying the foundation for strategic planning, monitoring achievements through a framework of metrics and benchmarks.
  • Full-Time Members: The full-time members to the council are Chief ministers of all states and of the Union Territories of Jammu and Kashmir, Delhi and Puducherry
  • Special Invitees: The Lieutenant Governors of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Ladakh, and the administrators of Chandigarh, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Daman and Diu and Lakshadweep are the special invitees of the governing council.
