CJI launches “SUPACE Portal”— AI-driven Research Portal

The Supreme Court of India recently launched the first AI driven research portal, Supreme Court Portal for Assistance in Court's Efficiency (SUPACE).

What is SUPACE?

SUPACE is a portal through which the Supreme Court intends to leverage machine learning to deal with the amount of data received in the filing of cases.

What is the Purpose of SUPACE?

SUPACE is an artificial intelligence-based portal. It will make the research work easier for judges, thereby easing their workload. The portal collects relevant facts and laws and makes them available to a judge. The portal is not designed to make decisions. It only processes facts and makes them available to judges, looking for input for a decision.

What are the significance of SUPACE?

The Supreme Court of India developed a software called SCI-Interact to make its 17 benches paperless. Other initiatives like LIMBS, E-Courts etc have also been developed.

As per the data released by NJDG or National Judicial Data Grid, 3.81 crore cases are still pending in various district and taluka courts. In this more than 1 lakh cases are over 30 years old.

Various district courts have a backlog rise of 18.2% from 2019 to 2020.

The pendency rate of High Courts has increased by 20.20% and 5.29% in 2018-19. In the Supreme Court the pendency rate has risen to 10.35% from 60,469 cases on March 1, 2020 to 66,727 cases on March 1, 2021.

What is Artificial Intelligence?

Artificial intelligence (AI) is a wide-ranging branch of computer science concerned with building smart machines capable of performing tasks that typically require human intelligence.

It is the endeavor to replicate or simulate human intelligence in machines. AI systems are used for control, planning and scheduling, knowledge representation, learning, natural language processing, perception and the ability to move and manipulate objects.

Artificial intelligence software is applied when the task becomes too complex for humans to handle. When smart machines are creating smart models of people, we say that these machines are getting brainier.
