Bardoibam Beelmukh Wildlife Sanctuary Bird Sanctuary covers an area of 11.25 sq. kms and is a breeding ground of large Whistling Teal. An ideal habitat for many different species birds, this is the third wildlife santuary primarily for conservation of birds.
Located in Dhemaji and Lakhimpur districts it is situated at 50-55 metres above sea level. Bordoibam was formed after the great earthquake of 1950 when the river Subansiri changed its course. It is good place for birwatching with quite a few species seen at close proximity including Adjutant Storks, Fishing Eagle etc. are found here.
The annual temperature in the santuary varies between maximum of 35 degree C & minimum of 11 degree C. It receives an annual rainfall of 3000-3500 mm with relative humidity of 93%.
Bardoibam Beelmukh is very important habitat for many wild birds.Among other species found here are 11 species of mammals, 16 species of reptiles, 8 species of amphibians & 42 species of different fishes.
So far approx 181 species of birds have been recorded.This figure includes several migratory winter visitors. Among the numerous birds found here, some are Little Grebe, Large Cormorant, Little Cormorant, Spotbilled Pelican, Indian Shag, Darter, Purple Heron, Grey Heron, Pond Heron, Night Heron, Little Egret, Chestnut Bittern, Openbilled Stork, Greater Adjutant Strok, Lesser Adjutant Stork, Grey Lag Goose, Cotton Teal, Brahminy Duck, Purple Moorhen, Swamp Patridge, Blackheaded Oriole, Wagtail, Indian River Tern, Drongo, Indina Roller, Pied Myna, Bulbul etc.
The vegetation of the santuary is dominated by aquatic flora.Apart from this it shows the presence of other semi-aquatic flora, climbers, & trees which usually grows near water-bodies.
It was declared as a Wildlife Sanctuary in 1996 by the Gov. of Assam. It covers parts of both Lakhimpur & Dhemaji districts of Assam.It comes under the the Ghilamora revenue circle of Dhakuakhana subdivision.
