February 2023 Current Affairs Quiz
The 3rd Quarter(Q3) GDP Growth:
At 4.4 percent, the latest quarterly growth number is lower than the 6.3 percent growth that was recorded in the second quarter of 2022-23, which itself was less than half the 13.2 percent increase posted in April-June 2022 as the GDP growth rate benefitted from a low base in the early part of the year.
RBI’s forecasts of The Fiscal Year 2023-24 GDP Growth:
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) forecasted 4.4 percent growth in the fourth quarter of 2022 in December. However, at the time, the central bank had projected this year’s growth rate at 6.8 percent.
But as per the statistics ministry’s first advance estimate of GDP, released in early January, India’s GDP was set to grow by 7 percent in 2022-23. The government’s second advance estimate, released on February 28, maintained India’s full-year GDP growth estimate of 7% for this year.
Manufacturing: A cause of concern:
According to data released by the National Statistical Office, India’s GDP growth slowed to a three-quarter low of 4.4% in October-December 2022-23, primarily due to a 1.1% contraction in manufacturing, as well as weaker private consumption demand and government expenditure (NSO). Chief Economic Adviser V Anantha Nageswaran said manufacturing, on the face of it, has slowed down but there are enough high-frequency indicators showing fairly robust manufacturing activity. “Manufacturing appears to have slowed down on the face of it due to rising input cost, but if you look at PMI (Purchasing Managers’ Index) indicators, the manufacturing sector is in good health and performance of core sector in January tells us we do have a fairly robust manufacturing growth rate in the fourth quarter,” he said.
7 percent GDP growth in this Fiscal Year(2023-24):
“Despite the global slowdown, India is poised to achieve 7% GDP growth in 2022-23,” Chief Economic Advisor (CEA) V Anantha Nageswaran said in a press conference following the release of the GDP figures. “The growth momentum carried on in October-December and it was the base effect which resulted in a GDP growth rate of 4.4 percent,” the CEA added. The gross value added (GVA) growth for the third quarter came in at 4.6 percent during the third quarter, as against 5.5 percent in the July-September period.
Consumption increased by 2.1 percent between October and December, compared to 8.8 percent between July and September. The capital formation growth also slipped to 8.3 percent in the third quarter, as against 9.7 percent in the second quarter of the current fiscal.
The Real & Nominal GDP Growth for This Fiscal Year(2023-24):
According to the second advance estimate, the country’s real GDP growth for FY23 is expected to be 7%. This is the same estimate that was shared in the first advance estimate. The nominal GDP growth is pegged at 15.9 percent in the second advance estimate, which is up from 15.4 percent in the first advance estimate. The government also reduced GDP growth for the April-June quarter from 13.5 percent to 13.2 percent.

They improve water quality by filtering, cycling and storing nutrients and pollutants, reducing contamination in seafood. Highly efficient carbon sinks, they can store up to 18% of the world’s oceanic carbon, making them a powerful nature-based solutions to tackle climate change impacts. They contribute to the resilience of the most vulnerable ecosystems and species, such as coral reefs, by buffering ocean acidification. And to the coastal populations, they act as the first line of defense along coasts by reducing wave energy, protecting people from the increasing risk of floods and storms.
World Seagrass Day: History

Risks for Further Credit Growth:
As per the Economic Survey 2022-23, if inflation declines in the upcoming fiscal and if real cost of credit does not rise, then credit growth is likely to be brisk in FY24.
The Economic Survey 2022-23 and The Credit Growth:
The rise in overall bank credit has also been influenced by borrowers’ shifting funding preferences away from volatile bond markets, where yields have risen, and external commercial borrowings, where interest and hedging costs have risen, according to the January Economic Survey. Growth in bank credit has kept pace with industrial growth, with a sequential surge evident since January 2022. While a large share of bank credit continues to be assigned to large industries, credit to micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) has also seen a significant increase in part assisted by the introduction of the Emergency Credit Line Guarantee Scheme (ECLGS), which supports around 1.2 crore businesses of which 95% are MSMEs, the Economic Survey said.
“The impact of ECLGS on increasing the growth of credit to MSME was felt most during the pandemic impacted years of 2020 and 2021. It continued in 2022 as the scheme was extended to March 2023. Furthermore, growth in credit to MSME was buttressed by rebounding consumption levels, particularly in the services sector. Consequently, the share of MSMEs in gross credit offtake to the industry rose from 17.7 per cent in January 2020 to 23.7 per cent in November 2022,” it added.

February 2023 Current Affairs Quiz
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India donated Irinjadappilly Raman to the temple, with the help of award-winning Indian film actor Parvathy Thiruvothu. ‘Irinjadappilly Raman’ will help conduct ceremonies at the temple in a safe and cruelty-free manner and thereby support real elephants’ rehabilitation and life in forests, ending the horror of captivity for them.
Head priest of the temple Rajkumar Namboothiri said:
- The majority of elephants in captivity in India, including Kerala, are held illegally or have been transported to another state without permission. Because elephants are wild animals that would not willingly obey human commands, they are trained and controlled through severe punishments, beatings, and the use of weapons with a metal-tipped hook when used for rides, ceremonies, tricks, and other purposes. Many have extremely painful foot ailments and leg wounds from being chained to concrete for hours on end, and most do not get adequate food, water, or veterinary care, let alone any semblance of a natural life.
- The frustration of captivity leads elephants to develop and display abnormal behaviour. At their wit’s end, frustrated elephants often snap and try to break free, running amok and so harming humans, other animals, and property.
- According to data compiled by the Heritage Animal Task Force, captive elephants killed 526 people in Kerala over a 15-year period.
- The chikkattukavu Ramachandran, who has been in captivity for about 40 years and is one of the most often used elephants in Kerala’s festival circuit, has reportedly killed 13 beings – six mahouts, four women, and three elephants.
