Why TransUnion Cibil in news?
V Anantharaman, a seasoned banker with substantial banking industry expertise, has been named non-executive chairman of credit bureau TransUnion CIBIL.Anantharaman has held leadership positions in corporate and investment banking teams at renowned international firms such as Standard Chartered Bank, Credit Suisse, Deutsche Bank, and Bank of America.
Anantharaman holds a post-graduate diploma in business management from XLRI and a bachelor’s degree in engineering from Jadavpur University. He has also served as a senior advisor to the UK’s Development Finance Institution, British International Investment (previously CDC).
In addition to his new role, Anantharaman serves on the boards of The Indian Hotels Company Limited, Axis Asset Management Company, IIFL Home Finance Ltd, and Ecom Express Ltd. - Designated as a Biosphere Reserve, the Gulf of Mannar is one of the biologically richest coastal regions in all of mainland of India. It is the first Marine Biosphere Reserve in the South and South East Asia.
- Location: It is located in Tamil Nadu, 160 kilometres from Dhanushkodi and Thoothukudi.
- This Marine Biosphere Reserve encompasses a chain of 21 islands (2 islands already submerged) and adjoining coral reefs off the coasts.
- Gulf of Mannar Marine National Park, established in 1980, boasts three surreal aquatic ecosystems – mangroves, seagrass, and coral reef.
Flora:
- The intertidal areas are dominated by mangroves belonging to the Rhizophora, Avicennia, Bruguiera genus. Seagrass is another prolific species, about 12 species exist here.
- About 150 species of seaweeds to are found in the waters. There is one endemic plant, a flowering herb called Pemphis acidula on the parklands.
Fauna:
- Dugong, an endangered marine mammal, is the main attraction of the Gulf of Mannar Marine National Park. It has identified 117 hard coral species. It is home to a variety of vulnerable whales, including humpback whales, blue whales, and fin whales.
Karnataka Announces Free Bus Travel ‘Shakti’ Scheme For Women
The Karnataka government has recommended women to apply for Shakti smart cards in order to enjoy free transportation on state-run buses from June 11.The government has already issued a set of guidelines on the ‘Shakti’ scheme, which is one of the major poll promises by the Congress party in Karnataka. According to the Karnataka transport department, women can apply for Shakti smart cards from June 11 at sevasindhu.karnataka.gov.in.
What all buses are excluded?
The Shakti scheme applies only on the ordinary state run bus services of Karnataka. Airavat, Airavat Club Class, Airavat Gold Class, Ambari, Ambari Dream Class, Ambari Utsav, Fly Bus, Vayu Vajra, Vajra, Non-AC Sleeper, Rajahamsa and EV Power Plus AC buses are excluded in this scheme. The plan does not apply to buses that go outside of the state. Men would be given 50% of the seats on KSRTC, NWKRTC, and KKRTC ordinary and express buses.
The Shakti scheme is one of the five guarantees that the Congress party made in its election manifesto. The other four guarantees are:
- 30% reservation for women in all government jobs
- Free education for all children from class 1 to 12
- Free healthcare for all
- Rs 2,500 per month pension for all women above the age of 60.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath launched the Nand Baba Milk Mission with a Rs 1,000 crore funding. Its aim is to boost milk production and empower milk producers by providing them with opportunities to sell their milk through dairy co-operative societies at fair prices.
UP Government launched Nand Baba Milk Mission scheme: Overview
- The mission includes plans to set up Dairy Farmer Producer Organizations (Dairy FPOs) and to pilot five in different districts of the state in 2023-24, with a focus on female participation.
- India ranks first in milk production globally, with Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Andhra Pradesh being the top-five milk-producing states.

- The Indian dairy sector is a significant contributor to the global milk production, accounting for 24%.

● FarmersFZ is one of 12 agri-food startups picked by the United Nations to help them grow their businesses.
● The multichannel marketplace platform, located in Kochi, functions beneath the Kerala Startup Mission (KSUM) and aims to finally accomplish the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.
● The CEO of the agritech direct-to-consumer (D2C) firm, Pradeep P.S., will attend the UN gathering in Rome next month.
● He stated that the UN programme would allow FarmersFZ to present its model to nations throughout continents.
About FarmersFZ:
While working at a company in New York, the CEO of a Kerala startup constructed and launched FarmersFZ’s website. After successfully convincing approximately 52 individuals to purchase from the startup within eight months, he returned to his hometown and ensured eight farmers that they would be paid a fair price for their crop.
The farmers grew a variety of crops such as ladies’ finger, yam, and snake gourd. In 2016, the CEO, Pradeep, resigned from his job and devoted his attention solely to FarmersFZ. In a short three months, the startup profited, as Pradeep recounted.
According to the report, the startup secured funding worth Rs 2.5 crore from the Indian Angel Network, Malabar Angels, and Nativelead Foundation in 2018. Nagaraja Prakasam, PK Gopalakrishnan, Malabar Angels, and Native Lead led the investment round.
Furthermore, being selected as one of only 12 startups globally for the UN accelerator programme marks another significant milestone in the startup’s ongoing growth and success. FarmersFZ unites over 300,000 consumers with 2,000 farmers in Kerala, bridging the gap between rural farmers and urban customers by bringing fresh, pesticide-free vegetables from the fields to the table within 24 hours of harvest.

The non-profit Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) released its yearly statistics compilation, ‘State of India’s Environment 2023: In Figures,’ on the occasion of World Environment Day. The report includes statistics on various aspects of the environment, including climate and extreme weather, health, food and nutrition, migration and displacement, agriculture, energy, waste, water, and biodiversity.
Telangana Ranks 1st for Overall Environmental Performance: Key Points
- The ranking of Indian states based on four parameters: the environment, agriculture, public health, and infrastructure is one of the report’s highlights this year.
- According to the research, Telangana is the top-ranked state in terms of overall environmental performance.
- The state’s progress in increasing forest cover and municipal waste treatment were the primary reasons for its ranking.
- However, the report also identified areas where the state performed below average, such as the share of water bodies not in use, stage of groundwater extraction, and change in the number of polluted river stretches.
According to a news statement issued by Telangana Minister K T Rama Rao, the state government’s ‘Haritha Haaram’ afforestation initiative and other environmentally friendly programmes played a key part in earning this prestigious award.

Alby D’Cruz, one of Kerala’s proud Defence personnel who always maintained a low profile despite being the first Keralaite to be conferred the Ashoka Chakra, passed away. Tata Group Is India’s Most Valuable Brand
According to the new rankings released by Brand Finance, the Tata Group with $26.38 billion has retained its position as the most valued brand in India.
With a value growth of 10.3% in 2023 as compared to 2022.
Notably, Tata Group is the only Indian brand to feature in the top 100 of the Brand Finance Global 500 2023.
While Infosys retained the second spot in the rankings with a brand value of $13 billion, followed by LIC with a value of $9.7 billion.
