Ramachandra Guha’s book wins Elizabeth Longford Prize
The Elizabeth Longford Prize for Historical Biography 2023 has been awarded to historian and author Ramchandra Guha for his book Rebels Against the Raj: Western Fighters for India’s Freedom. Guha has been awarded £5,000 (₹5 lakhs approximately) and a bound copy of Elizabeth Longford’s memoir. The jury was chaired by Roy Foster. The judging committee also included Antonia Fraser and Flora Fraser (daughter and granddaughter of Longford respectively), Richard Davenport-Hines and Rana Mitter.
Rebels Against the Raj demonstrates how absorption in individual lives may illuminate the mood of the times. As Guha points out, oppression does not disappear with the ending of colonial rule, and the ideas and priorities incisively drawn out in this book deserve urgent attention in today’s India,”. The book was published by Penguin Random House in India, William Collins in the United Kingdom, and Alfred Knopf in the United States.

India’s Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Ruchira Kamboj introduced the draft resolution titled ‘Memorial wall for fallen United Nations peacekeepers’ in the UN General Assembly Hall and it was adopted by consensus. 18 countries, including Bangladesh, Canada, China, Denmark, Egypt, France, India, Indonesia, Jordan, Nepal, Rwanda, and the United States, supported the resolution. It received a record 190 co-sponsorships.

Russia’s Sberbank Launches Indian Rupee Accounts For Individuals
Russia’s dominant lender, Sberbank has launched Indian rupee accounts for individuals.
Aim: To expand the range of foreign currencies available to reduce dependency on the U.S. dollar and euro
Sberbank has more than 100 million retail clients and already offers deposits in China’s yuan and UAE dirhams. Rupee accounts would also be available to clients. Sberbank would also raise rates on dirham deposits by 100 basis points for a six-week period.
The bank’s finance chief said earlier that Sberbank will issue bonds in Chinese yuan this year if an opportunity arises and will continue borrowing in roubles to drive portfolio growth.
Indian Navy Launches “Julley Ladakh” Outreach Program
The Indian Navy recently launched an outreach program called “Julley Ladakh” (Hello Ladakh) to increase awareness about the Navy and engage with the youth and civil society in the pristine state of Ladakh.
