Gupta Empire Art And Architecture: Know About Gupta Art and Architecture

Gupta Art and Architecture: The Gupta Empire ruled over ancient India from the start of the fourth century CE until the end of the sixth century CE. From roughly 319 to 467 CE, when it was at its height, it dominated a large portion of the Indian subcontinent. This period is known as India’s “Golden Age” by historians.

King Sri Gupta established the empire’s reigning dynasty, whose most important members were Chandragupta I, Samudragupta, Chandragupta II, and Skandagupta. According to the fifth-century CE Sanskrit poet Kalidasa, the Guptas are credited with capturing roughly twenty-one kingdoms both inside and outside of India. These kingdoms include those of the Parasikas, Hunas, Kambojas, tribes living in the west and east Oxus valleys, the Kinnaras, the Kiratas, and others.

Background of Gupta Art

Gupta Architecture

The first purpose-constructed Hindu (and Buddhist) temples, which sprang from the ancient tradition of rock-cut shrines, were created during the Gupta Dynasty in North Central India. These temples were frequently devoted to all of the Hindu gods and were decorated with towers and intricate decorations. The styles, designs, and elements of Gupta architecture are incredibly varied.

Gupta Architecture

The variety of Gupta structures shows that Hindu temple architecture was still developing and hadn’t yet reached the standardised state of subsequent centuries. Nonetheless, there is no denying that Gupta-era structures had an impact on later Indian temple design, which persisted all the way up to the Middle Ages. Regrettably, only a small portion of the numerous Gupta temples that were built have remained.

February 2023 Current Affairs Quiz

What is shrimp farming?

It is an aquaculture-based activity in marine or freshwater to produce shrimp for human consumption. Five south-western districts of Punjab, Muktsar, Fazilka, Ferozepur, Bathinda and Faridkot are known for shrimp farming.

Why was shrimp farming introduced in Punjab?

South-west Punjab has saline groundwater which is not suitable for agriculture. Waterlogging is a perennial problem in this belt. Therefore, shrimp farming was proposed as a solution for farmers whose land was lying unutilized. Shrimp cultivation was started in 2016-17 on a one acre plot in Ratta Kheda village of Muktsar district.

The project was a success, with a one-acre pond producing four tons of shrimp. The project was funded jointly by the central and state government. By 2022-23, a total of 1,212 acres of land has been taken up for shrimp farming in southwest Punjab, with a total production of 2,413 tonnes of shrimp.
