UN Public Service Day 2023: Date, Significance and History

UN Public Service Day 2023: Date, Significance and History

UN Public Service Day 2023

On June 23, we observe United Nations Public Service Day. This particular day is dedicated to recognizing the value of public services and the people who work in them. Public services play an important role in improving and growing our communities. The United Nations also created an awards program called the UN Public Service Awards to recognize and reward the best and most innovative public service projects. This program was updated in 2016 to match the goals of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. It’s a day that reminds us how valuable public services are and encourages young people to consider careers in this field.

Significance of United Nations Public Service Day

United Nations Public Service Day holds great significance. It is a day set aside to recognise and appreciate the value of public services and the individuals who work in them. Public services play a crucial role in our society by providing essential services to the community, such as healthcare, education, transportation, and public safety.

The day highlights the contribution of public service in the development process. It emphasizes that effective and responsive public administration is essential for the progress and well-being of countries worldwide. By celebrating this day, we acknowledge the hard work and dedication of public servants who strive to make a positive impact on people’s lives.

History of United Nations Public Service Day

The General Assembly designated June 23 as United Nations Public Service Day on December 20, 2002. It encouraged countries to hold special activities on this day to recognise the critical role of government in development. That’s when the UNPSA was created. This organization gives awards to public service institutions that make governments work better and help people more effectively in different countries. The UNPSA also promotes the importance of public service and the people who work in it.

Our communities rely heavily on public service and public servants. When the government offers services to citizens in a certain area, this is referred to as public service. Sometimes the government does the work, and sometimes they hire someone else to do it. For example, the police and fire department are run by the government, but trash pickup might be done by a different company that the government pays.

Public servants don’t just have a job—they want to make a positive difference in people’s lives. They think about others first because they want to give back to the community. Being a public servant means working hard and being dedicated to helping citizens. Public servants work in different jobs and government departments, but they all have the same values guiding their work. One important value is integrity, which means being honest and trustworthy. When public servants do a good job, it helps people trust the government more.

Tata Power Becomes Most Attractive Employer Brand; Amazon Follows: Report

Tata Power Becomes Most Attractive Employer Brand; Amazon Follows: Report

According to the most recent Randstad Employer Brand Research (REBR) 2023, Tata Power Company is India’s most appealing employer brand, closely followed by Amazon and Tata Steel. Tata Power, which was ranked ninth in the previous year’s survey, has risen significantly. Additionally, the report highlights the preferences and expectations of the Indian workforce when choosing an employer, with work-life balance, good reputation, and attractive salary and benefits being the key drivers.

The Importance of Work-Life Balance:

One of the primary factors influencing the choice of an employer is work-life balance. According to the REBR 2023, the importance of work-life balance has increased marginally over the years. This is especially important for women, who prioritise work-life balance more than males. In fact, 49 percent of the respondents mentioned that they are willing to resign or have already resigned from their current job to improve their work-life balance.

Supplemental Income and Second Jobs:

The report highlights an interesting trend among employees, with 91 percent agreeing that an employer becomes more attractive if they are allowed to take up additional jobs or assignments for supplemental income. This sentiment is stronger among women (92 percent) compared to men (89 percent), indicating the prevailing gender pay gap. Notably, the desire to take up a second job is highest among employees aged 25-34 and gradually declines with age.

Changing Expectations and Long-Term Career Progression:

According to Viswanath P.S, MD & CEO of Randstad India, changing times lead to shifting expectations among the talent community. Employees’ long-term career growth and job happiness are becoming increasingly crucial. Organizations worldwide are recognizing the pivotal role of people in driving business success. Employees seek not only job stability but also non-material benefits associated with being part of an employer brand. This includes identifying a clear purpose at work, which plays a crucial role in attracting and retaining talent.
