India Secured Approval To Set Up Second Hydropower Project In Nepal
Nepal has decided to grant India’s Satluj Jal Vidyut Nigam (SJVN) Limited permission to build a second hydropower project in the nation. SJVN is currently developing a 900-MW Arun -III hydropower project on the Arun River in Eastern Nepal, with a completion date of 2024. A meeting of the Investment Board Nepal (IBN) chaired by Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal aka Prachanda approved the draft project development agreement (PDA) to be signed with India’s state-owned SJVN to develop the 669-megawatt (MW) Lower Arun Hydropower project in eastern Nepal.

- The decision for development comes days before Prime Minister Prachanda visited India.
- Before it may be implemented, the draught must be approved by the Council of Ministers. The previous meeting of the IBN approved a Rs 92.68 billion investment for the project’s construction.
- The development of this 669-MW transformative project will prove to be a milestone for the socio-economic development of the country, according to the statement by the IBN.
- The SJVN has established a local firm in Nepal, Lower Arun Power Development firm.
- The Lower Arun project located in the Sankhuwasabha and Bhojpur districts will not have any reservoir or dam and will be a tailrace development of Arun-III, which will mean water re-enters the river for the Lower Arun project.
- This is the third project undertaken, all through negotiation windows, on the Arun River after the 900 MW Arun-III and 695 MW Arun-IV hydroelectricity projects.

On May 28, PM Narendra Modi Will Inaugurate Much-Awaited New Parliament Building
The building is a part of the redevelopment of the Central Vista project. On December 10, 2020, PM Modi laid the foundation stone of this new Parliament building.
The project was earlier targeted to be completed by October 2022 but got delayed due to various reasons.
Key features of the building:
It will have a built-up area of about 65,000 square metres. It will be composed of Lok sabha, Rajya Sabha, Central Hall Joint Session, Central Lounge, Constitutional Hall, and the offices. The building is triangular in shape and it will have a lifespan of more than 150 years.
It can accommodate 888 members in the chamber of the lower house, and 300 in upper house chamber. In September 2020, the contract for the construction of the new Parliament House at an estimated cost of Rs 862 crore was awarded to Tata Projects. However, the cost of the project crossed Rs 1000 crore.
8th Meeting Of Niti Ayog Governing Council Chaired By Pm Modi
On 27 may, the eighth meeting of the NITI Aayog Governing Council was held at the New Convention Center at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi. The meeting focused on the theme “Viksit Bharat @ 2047: Role of Team India.”
Seven more major topics were discussed in the meeting. Ireland has become the first country in the European Union to implement comprehensive health labelling on alcohol products.

Its purpose is to provide information to consumers about the health risks associated with the consumption of alcohol. The Public Health (Alcohol) (Labelling) Regulations 2023 and the remaining provisions of the Public Health (Alcohol) Act of Ireland were signed into law by Stephen Donnelly, Minister for Health, on 22 May 2023.
Regulations require alcohol product labels in Ireland to include key information such as calorie content and grams of alcohol. The labels will prominently display warnings about the risks of alcohol consumption during pregnancy, as well as the dangers of liver disease and alcohol-related cancers.
The introduction of comprehensive labelling enables consumers to make informed decisions about their alcohol consumption.

4th National Water Award 2023 Selection Of 41 Winners
The Department of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation, Ministry of Jal Shakti will organize the 4th National Water Awards Distribution Ceremony on June 17, 2023 at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi.

Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar has been requested to be the chief guest at the function. 41 winners including joint winners have been selected for the 4th National Water Awards, 2022. The awards include 11 categories including ‘Best State’, ‘Best District’, ‘Best Gram Panchayat’, ‘Best Urban Local Body’.
The award winners will be awarded a citation, trophy and cash prize. An amount of Rs 2 lakh has been kept for the first prize, Rs 1.5 lakh for the second prize and Rs one lakh for the third prize.

These awards will help in increasing public awareness about the importance of water and motivate them to adopt and promote best water use practices. Central Government Notifies Appointment Of CJ Of Himachal Pradesh HC
The Central government has notified the appointment of Justice MS Ramachandra Rao as the Chief Justice (CJ) of Himachal Pradesh HC.
He has succeeded CJ Amjad Sayed, who retired in January 2023. In addition, Justice SV Gangapurwala was appointed as the CJ of Madras HC. Presently, Justice S Vaidyanathan has been serving as the Acting CJ of Madras High Court. Justice Ramesh Dhanuka has been appointed as the Chief Justice of Bombay HC with a tenure of four days.
The Next Census Form Will Have Only Six Religions Options
The next census form will have only the option of six distinct religions- Hindu, Muslim, Christian, Buddhist, Sikh and Jain. The Sarnaism and the Lingayat religion have been not included despite demands from several communities.
The Nature-worshipping Adivasis of Jharkhand, Chattisgarh, and Odisha were demanding to include the Sarna faith as a separate religion.
Some people of Karnataka were also demanding to include the Lingayat religion as a separate religion.
