International Day For People Of African Descent
On August 31, 2021, a significant milestone was reached as the United Nations marked the first-ever International Day for People of African Origin. This day serves as a global acknowledgement of the cultural, social, and historical contributions made by people of African descent. With approximately 200 million people identifying as African heritage in the Americas alone, and millions more scattered around the world, this commemoration highlights the rich diversity that stems from African roots.
Daily Current Affairs Quiz: August 2023
A Tapestry of Diversity and Resilience
People of African descent represent a mosaic of cultures, languages, and traditions. Whether they are descendants of those impacted by the transatlantic slave trade or more recent migrants seeking new opportunities, their heritage is marked by a profound sense of resilience. Despite historical adversities, this group has emerged as a wellspring of multicultural richness, contributing significantly to various facets of human endeavor, including fields as vital as health.
Health Equity Challenges for People of African Descent
In the realm of health equity, people of African descent encounter a series of challenges stemming from exclusion, racism, xenophobia, and various forms of intolerance. These impediments increase their sensitivity and exposure to risk factors that contribute to poor health outcomes. Disparities in access to high-quality healthcare services exacerbate these problems. A glaring example of this disparity was unveiled during the COVID-19 pandemic, which laid bare some of the most profound inequities experienced by marginalized communities, including indigenous peoples and people of African descent.
A Call for Recognition and Action
The International Day for People of African Origin emerges as a platform to spotlight the exceptional contributions made by Africans and the wider African diaspora across the globe. More importantly, it serves as a clarion call to eradicate all forms of discrimination targeted at individuals of African descent. The day is an opportunity to reinforce the commitment to equality, social justice, and human rights for all.

Satellite-Based Communication for Fisher Safety
Nabhmitra operates on the basis of advanced satellite communication technology, allowing seamless two-way messaging between fishing boats and maritime authorities stationed at sea. This breakthrough technology greatly improves the communication channels and safety measures available to fishermen during their voyages.
ISRO’s Nabhmitra device: Key Features and Functions
