Nobel Prize in Physics 2023 awarded to Pierre Agostini, Ferenc Krausz and Anne L’Huillier
Pierre Agostini, Ferenc Krausz and Anne L’Huillier “for experimental methods that generate attosecond pulses of light for the study of electron dynamics in matter”. This year Nobel Laureates in Physics 2023 are being recognised for their experiments, which have given humanity new tools for exploring the world of electrons inside atoms and molecules. Pierre Agostini, Ferenc Krausz and Anne L’Huillier have demonstrated a way to create extremely short pulses of light that can be used to measure the rapid processes in which electrons move or change energy.
Fast-moving events flow into each other when perceived by humans, just like a film that consists of still images is perceived as continual movement. If we want to investigate really brief events, we need special technology. In the world of electrons, changes occur in a few tenths of an attosecond, an attosecond is so short that there are as many in one second as there have been seconds since the birth of the universe.
The laureates’ experiments have produced pulses of light so short that they are measured in attoseconds, thus demonstrating that these pulses can be used to provide images of processes inside atoms and molecules.
What is attoseconds?
An attosecond is an astonishingly short unit of time, equivalent to one quintillionth of a second, or 10^18 seconds (1 attosecond equals 0.000000000000000001 second).

Champion of Social Movements
Dr. Ambedkar’s legacy extends far beyond the drafting of the Indian Constitution. He was a tireless advocate for the rights of Dalits and untouchables, spearheading numerous social movements aimed at addressing the historical injustices faced by these marginalized communities. His unwavering commitment to social justice has left an indelible mark on India’s history and continues to inspire generations.

Ambedkarites around the world celebrate October 14 as Dhamma Chakra Parivartan Din, making this date an ideal choice for the statue’s inauguration.

Mr. Sutar is renowned for his exceptional craftsmanship and previously sculpted the iconic ‘Statue of Unity’ dedicated to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. This towering monument stands on an island in the Narmada River, downstream from the Sardar Sarovar Dam in Gujarat.
A Symbol of Equality and Human Rights
According to the Ambedkar International Centre (AIC), the memorial in Maryland aims to serve as a beacon, spreading Babasaheb’s messages and teachings. It symbolizes the enduring ideals of equality and human rights, reflecting the core principles that Dr. B.R. Ambedkar stood for throughout his life.
A Global Gathering of Followers
The unveiling of the ‘Statue of Equality’ is expected to draw a substantial number of representatives from the Ambedkarite movement and Dr. Ambedkar’s global followers. The event will witness the presence of admirers from across the United States and various parts of the world, coming together to pay homage to the legacy of Babasaheb.

India’s GST Revenue Growth Slows to 10.2% in September
In September 2023, India’s Gross Goods and Services Tax (GST) revenues witnessed a significant slowdown, growing at the slowest pace in 27 months. The growth rate dropped to 10.2% from the previous months’ approximately 10.8%. This decline, although notable, was coupled with some intriguing state-wise variations in GST collections.
Key Points:
1. National GST Revenues:
- Despite the slowdown, GST collections improved by 2.3% over August, reaching ₹1,62,712 crore.
- Revenues from domestic transactions, including services imports, were 14% higher compared to September 2022.
- This marked the fourth instance in the fiscal year 2023-24 when GST revenue crossed the ₹1.60 lakh crore mark.
2. State-wise Variations:
- Revenues in strife-torn Manipur recorded the highest growth among states, surging by 47%.
- Other states with notable growth included Telangana (33%), Jammu and Kashmir (32%), and Arunachal Pradesh (27%).
- However, Bihar was the only state to report a contraction, with GST collections down by 5%.
- Union Territories of Lakshadweep and Andaman and Nicobar Islands experienced significant declines of 45% and 30%, respectively. Conversely, Ladakh saw an 81% increase in revenues.
3. GST Components:
- Components of GST included Central GST (CGST) collections of ₹29,818 crore, State GST (SGST) of ₹37,657 crore, and Integrated GST (IGST) of ₹83,623 crore.
- GST compensation cess inflows were ₹11,613 crore, which included ₹881 crore collected on the import of goods.
- Pending dues from businesses, especially since the initiation of GST in 2017-18, might have contributed to the rise in September’s revenues.
4. Historical Context:
- The last time GST revenues grew at a slower pace was in June 2021, during the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, when collections rose by a mere 2%
