World Environment Day 2023: History, Theme, Poster, Significance And Slogan

World Environment Day 2023

Every year on June 5, World Environment Day is observed to promote awareness and inspire action for the protection of our planet. It was created by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972, and over 150 countries have participated in various activities to commemorate this day since then. World Environment Day is an important day to raise awareness and encourage action for the protection of our planet.

About World Environment Day 2023

As the largest global platform for environmental public outreach, World Environment Day has been celebrated by millions of people across the world since its establishment by the United Nations Environment Programme during the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment in 1972.

The UNEP has called for more efforts to reduce trash and transition to a circular economy, as well as the publication of a Beat Plastic Pollution Practical Guide and the encouragement of social media posts with the hashtag BeatPlasticPollution. More than 400 million tonnes of plastic are produced annually, with less than 10% recycled and an estimated 19-23 million tonnes ending up in bodies of water each year. Microplastics also pose a threat to health, with each person consuming an estimated 50,000 plastic particles annually.

World Environment Day 2023: Theme

The 50th anniversary of World Environment Day will be hosted by Côte D’Ivoire, with the theme of “solutions to plastic pollution”. In previous years, the themes included “Beat Air Pollution” (2019), “Biodiversity” (2020), and “Ecosystem Restoration” (2021). The theme will be announced several months in advance to allow for preparation and planning of events and activities.

World Environment Day 2023: Poster

Every year, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) issues a World Environment Day poster. These posters aim to raise awareness of the chosen theme and encourage people to take action in their communities. The posters are distributed globally, and individuals and organizations are encouraged to display them in their homes, offices, and public spaces.

World Environment Day 2023: History

  • The year 1972 saw a landmark conference organized by the United Nations in Stockholm, which prioritized the environment as its central agenda.
  • The event also acknowledged the fundamental right of all individuals to a healthy environment.
  • This historic conference paved the way for global efforts to safeguard and preserve the natural world, resulting in the establishment of the United Nations Environment Programme.
  • Additionally, it marked the official declaration of June 5th as the universal day for environmental awareness.
  • Since its inception, the UNEP has dedicated itself to numerous global initiatives aimed at safeguarding our earth’s resources.

The first World Environment Day, with the theme “Only One Earth,” was held in 1973. Since then, the occasion has addressed a variety of pressing environmental issues such as “Only One Future for Our Children” (1979), “A Tree for Peace” (1986), “For Life on Earth – Save Our Seas” (1998), “Connect with the World Wide Web of Life” (2001), and many others.

World Environment Day 2023: Significance

  • The significance of World Environment Day 2023 is immense, from raising awareness about environmental issues to initiating transformational changes in environmental policies worldwide.
  • As our planet’s natural resources continue to dwindle, environmental approaches have become overly politicized, and impact-lacking plans have failed to mitigate the devastating effects of climate change, pushing our planet towards an imminent ecological collapse.
  • In such dire circumstances, World Environment Day 2023 stands as a powerful catalyst for environmental activists, providing a platform to voice their concerns and highlight the negative impacts of global warming to the global community.
  • Losing lives, property, and biodiversity is just a fraction of the consequences of environmental indifference.
  • For over fifty years, World Environment Day has been instrumental in making common people conscious of the plight of our surrounding nature and impelling them to take affirmative action.

World Environment Day 2023: Slogan

  • Restore Our Earth – Together for a Sustainable Future
  • Act Now, Save Tomorrow!
  • Green Today, Clean Tomorrow!
  • Our Planet, Our Responsibility!
  • Plant a Tree, Save a Life!

International Day For The Fight Against Illegal, Unreported And Unregulated Fishing 2023

International Day for the Fight against Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing 2023

Every year on June 5, the International Day to Combat Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated Fishing is observed. The day was proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 2017 to raise awareness of the problem of illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing.

IUU fishing is a major threat to global fish stocks and the marine environment. It is estimated that IUU fishing costs the global economy up to $23 billion per year. IUU fishing can also lead to overfishing, habitat destruction, and the loss of biodiversity.

The International Day for the Fight against IUU Fishing is an opportunity to highlight the importance of sustainable fisheries management and to call for action to combat IUU fishing. There are a number of things that can be done to fight IUU fishing, including:

  • Strengthening national and international fisheries laws and regulations
  • Increasing monitoring and enforcement of fisheries laws
  • Raising awareness of the problem of IUU fishing
  • Promoting sustainable fishing practices

History behind the Day

The Committee on Fisheries endorsed the proposal for the declaration of 5 June as the International Day for the Fight against Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing. The date represents the day on which the Port State Measures Agreement became an international treaty. The entry into force of this agreement marks an historical event, as it is the first international legally-binding instrument specifically devoted to the fight against illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing.

The proposed draft resolution was submitted to the 40th Session of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) Conference (July 2017) for approval. In December 2017 the UN General Assembly in its annual resolution on sustainable fisheries proclaimed 5 June as the “International Day for the Fight Against Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing.” In the same resolution the UN also declared 2022 as the International Year of Artisanal Fisheries and Aquaculture, which will help focus attention on the small-scale fishermen and women who comprise 90 percent of the world’s fisheries work force.

Important takeaways for all competitive exams:

  • Food and Agriculture Organization Head: Qu Dongyu
  • Food and Agriculture Organization Headquarters: Rome, Italy.
  • Food and Agriculture Organization Established: 16 October 1945.

International Day of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression 2023

Every year on June 4, the International Day of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression draws attention to children who are victims of various forms of aggression. It serves as a solemn reminder of the suffering endured by countless children globally, regardless of the specific type of abuse they endure.

This day underscores the significance of offering support and protection to these children, reflecting the United Nations’ commitment to safeguarding children’s rights. By raising awareness about the difficulties faced by these vulnerable individuals, the International Day of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression calls upon individuals, communities, and nations to come together and take action to create a safer and more nurturing environment for children worldwide.

International Day of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression 2023: Significance

This day carries great importance as it focuses on the challenges faced by children who fall victim to aggression, violence, and abuse. It serves as a reminder to prioritize the protection and preservation of children’s rights across the globe. By recognizing the hardships endured by innocent children, this observance sheds light on their vulnerability.

The International Day of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression also emphasizes the role of governments, organizations, and individuals in guaranteeing the safety and well-being of children. It emphasises the United Nations’ and the international community’s commitment to protecting children from all forms of aggression, whether physical, mental, or emotional.

Additionally, it raises awareness about the detrimental impact of armed conflicts, violent extremism, and other acts of aggression on children. It calls for intensified efforts to prevent and alleviate such harms, advocate for children’s rights, and ensure accountability for violations.

International Day of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression 2023: History

The International Day of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression has a profound history rooted in the global commitment to safeguarding children’s rights and well-being. On August 19, 1982, during the UN General Assembly’s emergency special session on the question of Palestine, concerns were raised over the plight of innocent Palestinian and Lebanese children victimized by Israeli aggression. In response, the General Assembly designated June 4 as the annual observance of the International Day of Innocent Children Victims of Aggression.

In 1997, inspired by the influential Graça Machel report, which exposed the devastating impact of armed conflict on children, the General Assembly adopted Resolution 51/77 on the Rights of the Child. This resolution represented a significant milestone in efforts to protect children in conflict zones and established the mandate of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Children and Armed Conflict.

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development serves as a comprehensive roadmap for securing a better future for children worldwide. It features a specific target (16.2) dedicated to ending all forms of violence against children and integrates the elimination of child abuse, neglect, and exploitation across various targets addressing violence.
