Japan launches ‘moon sniper’ lunar lander SLIM into space
Japan has launched its lunar exploration spacecraft “moon sniper” aboard a homegrown H-IIA rocket, paving the way for the country to become the world’s fifth to land on the moon early next year. Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) said the rocket took off from Tanegashima Space Center in southern Japan as planned and successfully released the Smart Lander for Investigating Moon (SLIM). Japan aims to land SLIM within 100 metres of its target site on the lunar surface. The $100-million mission is expected to reach the moon by February.

With its Chandrayaan-3 mission to the unexplored lunar south pole, India became the fourth country to safely land a spacecraft on the moon. Japan’s previous moon landing attempts failed last year.
Japan’s Lunar Landing Challenges
JAXA lost contact with the OMOTENASHI lander and scrubbed an attempted landing in November. The Hakuto-R Mission 1 lander, made by Japanese startup ispace, crashed in April as it attempted to descend to the lunar surface. The X-Ray Imaging and Spectroscopy Mission (XRISM) satellite, a collaborative mission of JAXA, NASA, and the European Space Agency, is also aboard the H-IIA rocket.
The H-IIA Rocket Launch
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries manufactured the rocket and operated the launch, which marked the 47th H-IIA rocket Japan has launched since 2001, bringing the vehicle’s success rate close to 98%. JAXA had suspended the launch of H-IIA carrying SLIM for several months while it investigated the failure of its new medium-lift H3 rocket during its debut in March.
Japan’s space missions have faced other recent setbacks, with the launch failure of the Epsilon small rocket in October 2022, followed by an engine explosion during a test in July. The country plans to send astronauts to the moon in the late 2020s.

Prayagraj Police Launches ‘Savera’ Scheme To Assist Senior Citizens
The Prayagraj police have taken a proactive move to ensure the safety and well-being of senior residents in their community. They have recently launched the ‘Savera‘ scheme, aimed at offering essential services during health and other emergencies to senior citizens residing in seven districts within the Prayagraj zone. This initiative has garnered significant attention and participation, with over 700 senior citizens registering in just the past three days.
Daily Current Affairs Quiz: September 2023
A Lifeline for Seniors
Prayagraj police are methodically preserving a thorough database of those aged 60 and above under the ‘Savera’ scheme. These records are accessible through a dedicated helpline number, 112, ensuring a quick and efficient response in times of need. One of the key objectives of the police officers involved in this scheme is to conduct frequent safety checks at registered elderly persons’ houses. These examinations are critical in ensuring the safety and well-being of older people who may otherwise be vulnerable.
Regular Home Visits
A notable aspect of the ‘Savera’ scheme is the commitment of the police to send beat police personnel for regular visits to the homes of senior citizens. During these visits, the officers engage with the elderly residents, inquiring about their well-being, and addressing any concerns they may have. This proactive approach not only enhances the sense of security for senior citizens but also strengthens the bond between law enforcement and the community.
Preventing Delays and Ensuring a Timely Response
According to Additional DG (Prayagraj zone), Bhanu Bhaskar, the ‘Savera’ scheme was launched with the primary objective of enhancing response time and preventing delays in addressing senior citizens’ concerns. Often, senior citizens face difficulties in obtaining timely assistance, especially when they live alone. The scheme aims to bridge this gap by ensuring that registered seniors can quickly access the help they need.
Registration Process and Integration with Emergency Services
The registration process for senior citizens aged 60 and above is straightforward. They can register for the ‘Savera’ scheme online, and their information is automatically transmitted to the local police station through the 112 helpline. Once the information is received, the police station verifies it by sending a police officer to confirm the details. Once verification is complete, the senior citizen becomes a registered user of the scheme.
The ‘Savera’ scheme, in addition to offering direct aid through police stations, connects with other critical hotline services such as 108 for ambulance, 181 for women in crisis, and 101 for fire services. This integration ensures that senior citizens registered with the ‘Savera’ scheme can easily access all necessary emergency services promptly.
