History of World Intellectual Property Day:

The event was established by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in 2000 to “raise awareness of how patents, copyright, trademarks and designs impact on daily life.” April 26th was chosen as the day to celebrate World Intellectual Property Day as it coincides with the date when the convention establishing the World Intellectual Property Organization came into effect in 1970.

Former president of Kenya, Mwai Kibaki died at 90. He led the country from 2002 to 2013.

During his rule, more than 1,100 people died in bloody ethnic battles after disputed 2007 polls, but to prevent such unrest he adopted new constitution with reforms.

His rule was ruined by uncontrolled corruption and lavish spending on flagship projects which increased country’s debt.

India to host 21st World Congress of Accountants (WCOA) 2022

Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) will host 21st World Congress of Accountants (WCOA) for the first time in 118 years. About 6000 top accountants from 130 countries will participate in the programme physically.

The event will be held from November 18 to 21 after outbidding France.The event will be held at Jio World Convention Centre in Mumbai.

The theme for 2022 would be `Building Trust Enabling Sustainability’.

Khongjom Day is a regional public holiday in the Indian state of Manipur. It is observed every year on April 23rd. It marks the anniversary of a battle that was fought at the Kheba hills of Khongjom in Manipur in 1891. This day is observed to pay tribute to the war heroes of the 1891 Anglo-Manipuri War, who sacrificed their lives fighting against the British to protect the freedom of Manipur. 

KEY POINTS:

  • Manipur Governor La Ganesan and Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, as well as the general public, attended the state-level Khongjom Day ceremony at Khongjom War Memorial Complex in Khebaching, Thoubal district.
  • Every year on the 23rd of April, Manipur commemorates Manipuri warriors who battled against the British, especially Major Paona Brajabashi. The Governor and Chief Minister of Manipur joined the people of Manipur in a floral homage to the heroes. At Khebaching, two minutes of silence were held, as well as a gun salute.
  • Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, speaking at the event, stated that the younger generation must remember our forebears’ sacrifices and always fight for a united nation. Chief Minister also thanked the Centre for renaming Mount Harriet in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands as Mount Manipur. He explained that the decision was made in honour of Manipur fighters’ sacrifice.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has selected the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award for acting to protect democracy.

Zelenskyy was selected because he marshaled the spirit, patriotism and untiring sacrifice of the Ukrainian people in a life-or-death fight for their country.

Caroline Kennedy and Jack Schlossberg will present the awards on May 22 at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library in Boston.

Dhanlaxmi Bank signs pact with CBDT & CBIC for tax collection

Dhanlaxmi Bank has signed a pact with Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) and Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) for tax collection.

The bank has been authorised by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) based on recommendation from the Controller General of Accounts for collection of various taxes.

This MoU will help customers to pay their direct taxes and GST payments and other indirect taxes through the branch network and digital platforms of the bank.

Kishore Das selected for Commonwealth Points of Light Award

Kishroe Kumar Das(Bangladesh) has been chosen for the Commonwealth Points of Light Award for his exceptional work in improving access to education for children from marginalised backgrounds.

He started an educational charity named Bidyanando in 2013 with just 22 students.

He also started a meal programme named Ek takay aahar (Meal for one Taka) which has provided more than 10,000 nutritious meals for vulnerable people (particularly children, homeless).

Eminent writer Padma Shri Binapani Mohanty dies

Noted writer of Odisha and Padma shri awardee (2020) Binapani Mohanty has passed away.

Her many short stories have been translated various languages (including: Hindi, English, Kannada, Marathi).

Her collection of short stories ‘Pata Dei’ has won Sahitya Akademi award. She also received Sarala Samman from the Government of Odisha.

She was born in Berhampur, started her teaching career as a lecturer in Economy in 1960.
