Delhi government banned Ola, Rapido, Uber Bike:
The usage of bike taxi services, including those provided by well-known applications like Ola, Uber, and Rapido, has been forbidden in Delhi. The Delhi Transport Department issued the order banning the use of bike taxis on the grounds that doing so is against the law. The department ordered the bike taxi business owners to immediately cease operations.
February 2023 Current Affairs Quiz
The Delhi government just issued a ban, but it only applies to motorbikes because it hasn’t yet prohibited cars or cab services. The primary factor, according to the Delhi Transport Directorate, is that bike taxi drivers consistently break the rules. It states that two-wheelers are not permitted to transport non-commercial quantities of passengers for profit. By facilitating booking through an app, some digital platforms are enabling these operations in violation of Section 93 by acting as aggregators, and shall be punishable with a fine up to Rs 1 lakh under Section 193(2) of Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, as per the department.
Reason for ban on Ola, Rapido, Uber Bike Service
- In contravention of the Motor Vehicle Act of 1988, it has come to our attention that two-wheelers with a Non-Transport (Private) registration mark or number are being used to transport people for hire or reward.
- When two-wheelers are used for business purposes, the Motor Vehicles Act of 1988 is broken.
- Following the Delhi Transport Department’s directive, hefty fines have been imposed on persons using two-wheelers as taxis.
Heavy fine for the violation of law:
- For a first offence, there may be a 5,000 rupee fine; for a second offence, there may be a 10,000 rupee fine and up to a year in jail.
- In addition, a Supreme Court committee will decide to suspend the driver’s licence for a minimum of three months.
- The fine for the applications might be as high as Rs 1 lakh.
