A boat takes 112 hours to travel x distance downstream from place A to place B and come back to place Z which is x/1.5 distance between A and B. If the speed of the boat in still water is 14 km/hr and the speed of the stream is 6 km/hr, then find the distance between A and B?

A.            840 km

B.            712 km

C.            926 km

D.            1024 km

Sol:

Speed of the boat downstream = 14 + 6 = 20

km/hr

Speed of the boat upstream = 14 – 6 = 8 km/hr

Let distance covered between A and B = x km

Then, according to the question,

x/20 + (x/1.5)/8 = 112

x/20 + x/12 = 112

(3x + 5x)/60 = 112

8x/60 = 112

x = 112 × 60/8

x = 840 km
