I: x2 – x – 12 = 0 II: y2 – 2y -15 = 0

Direction: Following question contains two equations as I and II. You have to solve both equations and determine the relationship between them and give answer as,

Q.

I: x2 – x – 12 = 0 II: y2 – 2y -15 = 0

A.            x < y

B.            x > y

C.            x ≤ y

D.            x ≥ y

E.            Relationship between x and y cannot be determined

Sol:

From I =>x2 – x – 12 = 0

=>x2 – 4x + 3x – 12 = 0

=>x(x – 4) +3(x – 4) = 0

=> (x – 4) (x + 3) = 0

=> x = 4, -3

From II =>y2 – 2y – 15 = 0

=>y2 – 5y + 3y – 15 = 0

=>y(y – 5) +3(y – 5) = 0

=> (y – 5) (y + 3) = 0

=> y = 5, -3

Hence, relationship between x and y cannot be determined
