Packaged “parottas” would attract a GST of 18 percent

According to government sources the 18% GST would thus apply to frozen parottas that are preserved, sealed and packed and not the fresh parottas served at restarurants. Bengaluru-based ID Fresh Foods had approached the Karnataka bench of the AAR on whether preparation of whole wheat parotta and Malabar parotta can be classified under Chapter 1905 attracting 5 per cent GST.

A Parotta is a layered flatbread made from maida flour. Parottas are frequently eaten with vegetable kurma or chicken, fish, mutton saalna (a spicy curry).

It is a common street food in southern India, especially in Kerala and the countries of United Arab Emirates, Sri Lanka etc.

There are different types of parotta including coin porotta, Malabari porotta, berotta, etc.

The GST Council at its 37th meeting had discussed the rate on frozen and preserved parotta and did not recommend reducing the tax rate as this product is sold by the organised sector.
