World Blood Donor Day is celebrated on 14 June each year to raise global awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products for transfusion and of the critical contribution voluntary, unpaid blood donors make to national health systems.

This year, the theme, rather the slogan, for the day is ‘Give blood and keep the world beating.’ This highlights the contribution the blood donors have made in this regard.

The day also provides an opportunity to call to action to governments and national health authorities to provide adequate resources and put into place systems and infrastructures to increase the collection of blood from voluntary, non-remunerated blood donors.

This day was first organized by the World Health Organization on June 14, 2005. Since then, this day is celebrated to raise awareness as well as thank the various blood donors around the world who do their bit to save a life.
