The fifth edition of India – Japan Maritime Bilateral Exercise, JIMEX, between the Indian Navy (IN) and the Japan Maritime Self-Defence Force (JMSDF), will be held in the Arabian Sea from 06 to 08 October 2021. JIMEX series of exercises commenced in January 2012 with a special focus on maritime security cooperation. The last edition of JIMEX was conducted in September 2020.
JIMEX-21 aims to develop a common understanding of operational procedures and enhance inter-operability through the conduct of a multitude of advanced exercises, across the entire spectrum of maritime operations.
The Indian Navy will be represented by indigenously built Guided Missile Stealth Destroyer Kochi and Guided Missile Frigate Teg, P8I Long Range Maritime Patrol Aircraft, Dornier Maritime Patrol Aircraft, integral helicopters, and MiG 29K fighter aircraft
Naval cooperation between India and Japan has increased in scope and complexity over years. JIMEX-21 will further enhance the cooperation and mutual confidence between the two navies and fortify the long-standing bond of friendship between the two countries.
The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced the 2021 Nobel Prize in Physics on October 05, 2021. The Nobel Prize for Physics has been awarded to scientists from Japan, Germany, and Italy. Scientists Syukuro Manabe, Klaus Hasselmann, and Giorgio Parisi won the 2021 Nobel Prize for Physics for their “groundbreaking contributions to our understanding of complex physical systems”. Three Laureates shares the 2021 award for groundbreaking contributions and studies of chaotic and apparently random phenomena.
While one half of the award has been given jointly to US-based Syukuro Manabe and Klaus Hasselmann of Germany “for the physical modelling of Earth’s climate, quantifying variability and reliably predicting global warming”. The other half of the award has been conferred to Giorgio Parisi from Italy “for the discovery of the interplay of disorder and fluctuations in physical systems from atomic to planetary scales.”
The prestigious prize is worth 10 million Swedish crowns ($1.15 million) and is given by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.
Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh gave away the awards to the winners of the ‘Dare to Dream 2.0’ Contest of Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) in New Delhi on October 04, 2021. The Raksha Mantri gave away awards to 40 winners – 22 in the Individual category and 18 in the Startup category. He also launched ‘Dare to Dream 3.0’ to promote innovators & startups and provide a platform for the young ignited minds in the country.
Dare to Dream is a pan-India contest by DRDO to promote Indian academicians, individuals, innovators, and startups and provide a platform for the young ignited minds in the country, to develop emerging defence and aerospace technologies/systems.
The winners get technical and financial support from DRDO for realisation of their ideas under the Technology Development Fund (TDF) scheme. Besides this, the minister also gave away DRDO Young Scientists awards for the year 2019.
The award was conferred upon sixteen DRDO scientists, under the age of 35 years, for their outstanding contribution in areas of their expertise.
On this occasion, three products/systems indigenously developed by DRDO were also handed over to the Armed Forces. These are:
- ARINC818 Video Processing and Switching Module: The module, developed for the Indian Air Force, was handed over to the Vice Chief of Air Staff Air Marshal Sandeep Singh. It is a state-of-the-art module with high bandwidth, low latency, channel bonding, easy networking and will cater to 5th generation aircraft development programmes.
- Sonar Performance Modelling System: Developed for the Indian Navy, the system was handed over to Vice Chief of Naval Staff Vice Admiral Satish Namdeo Ghormade. It is useful for Indian Naval ships, submarines and under water surveillance stations etc.
- Bund Blasting Device Mk-II: The device, developed for Indian Army,was handed over to the Vice Chief of Army Staff Lt Gen CP Mohanty. It is used to reduce the height of Ditch-cum-Bund obstacles to enhance the mobility of mechanised infantry during wartime.

Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya launched ICMR’s Drone Response and Outreach in North East (i-Drone) here on October 04, 2021. The delivery model is aimed at ensuring that life-saving vaccines reach everyone. The i-Drone has been developed by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).

The main objective of this tool is to facilitate vaccine delivery to tough and hard-to-reach terrains of India and to improve healthcare accessibility to the last mile. Currently, the drone-based delivery project is being implemented in Manipur, Nagaland, and the union territory of Andaman and Nicobar Island.
ICMR collaborated with the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur for conducting an initial study to test the capacity of drones to carry and transfer vaccines safely.

Vice President of India M. Venkaiah Naidu has conferred Assam Government’s biennial Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi Award for National Integration and National Contribution for the year 2021, on October 03, 2021, to three recipients.

The biennial Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi Award was instituted by the Government of Assam in 1993 in memory of the first Chief Minister of Assam Bharat Ratna Lokapriya Gopinath Bordoloi.
The award carries five lakh rupees each, a citation, and an angavastram. The Vice President said that Gopinath Bordoloi was a true statesman and we must take inspiration from his works.

The 10-month long online chess tournaments were held on chess24.com from November 22, 2020, till October 4, 2021. The tournaments are not rated by FIDE. The MCCT tour comprised 10 total tournaments.

The first consignment of Geographical Indication (GI) tagged sweet dish Mihidana, from Bardhaman, West Bengal has been exported to the Kingdom of Bahrain. This initiative is part of the effort to promote indigenous & Geographical Identification (GI) tagged products of India globally. The consignment of the unique sweet dish Mihidana was exported to Bahrain by APEDA registered M/S DM Enterprises, Kolkata, and imported by Aljazira Group, Bahrain.
The sweet dish from West Bengal is being displayed (also provided for testing purposes) to consumers at Aljazira superstores in Bahrain. More consignments of the unique sweet dish would be exported to Bahrain during the forthcoming Diwali festival.
West Bengal’s Bardhaman got the GI tag for the Mihidana sweetmeats in 2017. A GI tag is a sign denoting a specific geographical origin and possesses qualities or a reputation that are due to that origin.
