Lok Sabha passes National Institute of Design (Amendment) Bill, 2019

Lok Sabha has passed the National Institute of Design (Amendment) Bill, 2019 with the objective to make the National Institute of Design (NID) in the States of Madhya Pradesh, Assam, Haryana and Andhra Pradesh as the institutions of national importance. This bill was passed in Rajya Sabha on August 6, 2019.

National Institute of Design institutes are registered as Societies under the Societies Registration Act, 1860 and do not have the power to grant degrees or diplomas. On being declared institutions of national importance, they will be able to grant degrees and diplomas. This bill will help them become socially inclusive and address the needs of design in various sectors including agriculture, health care, and transportation.
