Deposits in Jan Dhan accounts cross Rs 1.5 lakh crore: Finance Ministry

Deposits in bank accounts opened under the Jan Dhan scheme, launched about seven and half years ago by the government, have crossed the Rs 1.5 lakh crore mark.

The total balance in accounts under the Jan Dhan scheme was recorded at Rs 1,50,939.36 crore as on December-end 2021. As per the finance ministry data, of the total 44.23 crore accounts, 34.9 crore were with the public sector banks, 8.05 crore with regional rural banks, and the rest 1.28 crore with private sector banks. RuPay Debit Cards were issued to 31.28 crore PMJDY beneficiaries under this scheme.

Uzbeki GM Nodirbek Abdusattorov wins 2021 Open World Rapid Championship

The young Uzbekistan GM Nodirbek Abdusattorov has won the 2021 FIDE World Rapid Chess Championship. Nodirbek Abdusattorov won the World Rapid Chess Championship 2021 in Warsaw at the age of 17 on December 28, becoming the youngest World Rapid Chess Champion in the history.

Meanwhile the Women’s World Rapid Chess Championship title has been won by GM Alexandra Kosteniuk of Russia.

The Golden Globe Awards 2022 ceremony was held on January 9, 2022, to recognize excellence in film, both American and international, and American television. The 79th Golden Globe Awards honored the best in film and American television of 2021, as chosen by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA). The ceremony took place on January 9, 2022. The nominations were announced on December 13, 2021 by rapper Snoop Dogg and HFPA president Helen Hoehne.

Two of the films namely The Power of the Dog and the West Side Story, won the most number of awards with 3 each.

Former RBI Governor Urjit Patel Appointed as Vice President of Beijing-based AIIB

Former Reserve Bank of India (RBI) governor Urjit Patel has been appointed as a vice-president of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB)for a period of 3 years, a Beijing-based multilateral development bank.

Mr Patel will be one of the five Vice Presidents of the AIIB. He is expected to take charge from February 2022. He will succeed outgoing Vice President D J Pandian, who is in charge of sovereign and non-sovereign lending of the AIIB in South Asia, the Pacific Islands and South-East Asia.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated Kalpana Chawla Centre for Research in Space Science & Technology at Chandigarh University on January 10, 2022.

Named after India-born astronaut Kalpana Chawla, who lost her life in the 2003 Columbia shuttle disaster, Rajnath said that this research facility would touch new heights of success, similar to the remarkable achievements of the late India-born astronaut.

The centre will train students in space science, satellite development and meeting future challenges in space research. The Minister also launched a Scholarship Scheme, worth Rs 10 crore, for the wards of Defence Personnel of the three Services.

In Tennis, French tennis player Gael Monfils beat Russia’s Karen Khachanov in men’s single event of the 2022 Adelaide International 1 to claim 11th ATP title of his career. In women’s category, World number one Australian star Ashleigh Barty beat Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan to win her second Adelaide International title.

The 2022 Adelaide International’s, first event, (Adelaide International 1) will be hosted from 3rd to 9th January 2022 and will feature a WTA 500 and ATP 250 combined tournament, followed by the 2nd Adelaide International event, (Adelaide International 2) a WTA 250 and ATP 250 tournament from 9th to 15th January 2022.

British publisher HarperCollins announced that it has acquired rights to publish the authorized biography of Tata Sons chairman emeritus Ratan Tata’s. The book will be released in all formats in November 2022. The biography is penned by a former senior bureaucrat and retired IAS officer Dr. Thomas Matthew.

It will be published by HarperCollins. The book chronicles around the 84-year-old Ratan Tata’s childhood, college years, and early influences, among other things.

The Ministry of Railways has approved the renaming of the Kevadiya railway station in Narmada district of Gujarat, as Ekta Nagar railway station. This Gujarat’s railway station which falls under the Vadodara division has been renamed as ‘Ekta Nagar’ railway station. The station code of Ekta Nagar railway station will be EKNR and the numerical code of the station will be 08224620.

Oscar and Grammy-winning lyricist Marilyn Bergman passes away at 93

Marilyn Bergman, the Oscar-, Emmy- and Grammy-winning songwriter whose lyrics written with her husband, Alan Bergman, graced such hits as ‘The Way We Were’, ‘The Windmills of Your Mind’, ‘In the Heat of the Night’ and the songs from ‘Yentl’, has died aged 93.

Bergman collaborated with her husband, Alan Bergman for song-writing. The renowned music-writing duo wrote the music and lyrics for numerous celebrated television shows, films, and stage musicals.

The pair were nominated for Oscars 16 times, and won three times.
