A container contains 175 liters mixture of acid and water in the ratio of 5:2. If one-fifth of the mixture is taken out and n liters of water is added to the mixture, then the ratio of milk and water becomes 5:3. Find the value of n?

A.            20

B.            35

C.            10

D.            40

E.            None of these

Sol:

The quantity of acid in the container = 175 * 5/(5

+ 2) = 175 * 5/7 = 125 liters

The quantity of water in the container = 175 –

125 = 50 liters

1/5th of the quantity of the mixture in the

container = 175/5 = 35 liters

(125 – 35 * 5/(5 + 2))/(50 – 35 * 2/(5 + 2) + n) =

5/3

(125 – 35 * 5/7)/(50 – 35 * 2/7 + n) = 5/3

(125 – 25)/(50 – 10 + n) = 5/3

100 * 3 = 5 * (40 + n)

300 = 200 + 5n

n = 100/5

n = 20
