| About City: | The history of the city dates back to around 890, as indicated by an ancient Kannada stone inscription found at the Nageshwara Temple in Begur, Bengaluru. In 1537, Kempé Gowdā, a feudal ruler under the Vijayanagara Empire, built a mud fort, which is regarded as the foundation of modern Bengaluru and its oldest neighborhoods, known as pétés, that still exist today. After the decline of the Vijayanagara Empire, Kempe Gowda declared independence; however, in 1638, a large army from the Adil Shahi Bijapur defeated Kempe Gowda III, leading to Bengaluru coming under the control of Shahaji Bhonsle as a jagir, which later became his capital. The Mughals eventually captured Bengaluru and sold it to Maharaja Devaraja Wodeyar II of the Kingdom of Mysore. When Haider Ali took over the kingdom, he assumed control of Bengaluru’s administration. The British East India Company captured the city after their victory in the Fourth Anglo-Mysore War in 1799, subsequently returning administrative control of the city and the kingdom to Maharaja Krishnaraja Wadiyar III. The old city flourished under the maharaja’s rule. In 1809, the British moved their cantonment to Bengaluru, outside the old city, leading to the growth of a town around it. After India gained independence in 1947, Bengaluru became the capital of Mysore State, and it continued to serve as the capital when the state was expanded and unified in 1956, later being renamed Karnataka in 1973. The two urban areas of Bengaluru, the town and the cantonment, which had developed as separate entities, merged into a single urban center in 1949. The city was commonly referred to as Bangalore in English until the official name, Bengalūru, was adopted in 2006. Bengaluru is recognized as one of the fastest-growing major metropolises globally. Recent estimates of the metro economy in its urban area have ranked Bengaluru among the most productive metro regions in India.
