Centre approves Terai Elephant Reserve in Uttar Pradesh: The Union Ministry of Forests, Environment and Climate Change gave its nod to the establishment of the Terai Elephant Reserve (TER) in Uttar Pradesh. The reserve will cover an area of 3049 sq km including Dudhwa Tiger Reserve (DTR) and Pilibhit Tiger Reserve (PTR). It will be the second elephant sanctuary in UP and the 33rd in India.The Terai Elephant Reserve will be developed in the joint forest areas of Dudhwa and Piliphit tiger reserve. The Terai Elephant Reserve includes protected areas, forest areas, and corridors for the conservation of wild elephants.

- Environment Minister Bhupendra Yadav said the move would help conserve the population of cross-border migratory elephants.
- The reserve through implementing human-elephant conflict mitigation strategies will protect the villagers living in the Indo-Nepal border area of Uttar Pradesh.
- This will also be beneficial for the two tiger reserves by managing grassland and corridor maintenance.
- The TER is the third new elephant reserve approved under Project Tiger in the last three months.
- Lemru in Chattisgarh and Agasthymalai in Tamil Nadu are the other two TERs.
