CM Uddhav Thackeray flagged off Maharashtra’s first-of-its-kind Jail Yatra
In a first-of-its-kind project in Maharashtra, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray launched the State’s jail tourism initiative. The ‘Jail Yatra’, which began with Pune’s 150-year-old Yerwada Jail on the occasion of Republic Day, will eventually be extended to other prisons in the State.

Constructed in 1866, Yerawada Central Prison is the largest jail in Maharashtra and one of the largest maximum security prisons in the country.
In Maharashtra, there are 16 functioning prisons that were built in the 19th century, the oldest being Byculla District Prison in Mumbai which started in 1840.
