Bajaj Allianz Life Launches Bima-ASBA, a First in India

Bajaj Allianz Life Insurance Company (BALIC) has launched the Bima-Application Supported by Blocked Amount (Bima-ASBA) facility, becoming the first insurer in India to implement this innovative payment method. This initiative, introduced by the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI), is designed to improve transparency and convenience in premium payments. With Bima-ASBA, policyholders can block a designated premium amount in their bank accounts, providing enhanced financial security and control. This initiative is in line with IRDAI’s broader objective of making insurance more accessible and streamlining transactions for customers.

How Does the Bima-ASBA Facility Work?

Bima-ASBA, which was launched on February 22, 2025, allows policyholders to authorize the blocking of a premium amount—up to ₹2 lakh—directly from their bank accounts through UPI’s One-Time Mandate (OTM). Unlike traditional payment methods, the blocked amount stays in the policyholder’s bank account, accruing interest until the insurer completes the underwriting process and accepts the policy. If the policy is issued, the amount is debited; however, if it is rejected or not processed within 14 days, the blocked amount is automatically released back to the policyholder.

This feature eliminates the need for upfront premium payments, ensuring that customers do not face delays or hassles in getting refunds if their policy is not approved.

Indian Coast Guard Holds ‘Sagar Kavach’ Drill for Coastal Security

The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) conducted the ‘Sagar Kavach’ security exercise along the 158 km coastline of West Bengal on February 21-22, 2025. This two-day operation aimed to assess and improve the coastal security system by involving various agencies in responding to simulated threats. The focus of the exercise was on improving Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and fostering better inter-agency coordination to address potential threats along India’s eastern maritime border.

What Were the Key Scenarios in the ‘Sagar Kavach’ Exercise?

The ‘Sagar Kavach’ exercise was designed to simulate real-life security threats and measure the preparedness of maritime forces. Several threat-based scenarios were included in the drills:

  • Hijacking Incidents: Security forces handled scenarios where fishing boats and barges were hijacked, replicating potential terrorist landings and hostage situations.
  • Smuggling Operations: The drills tested the response to illegal transportation of goods and contraband along the coastline, a known security challenge in the region.
  • IED Threats: The exercise also included the detection and disposal of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) planted on critical infrastructure, such as ports and jetties.

By covering a broad range of security threats, the exercise ensured that all agencies involved were well-equipped to deal with real-world situations.

Why is the ‘Sagar Kavach’ Exercise Important for West Bengal?

West Bengal’s coastline is strategically significant due to its geographical and economic features:

  • Large Maritime Community: Over 330,000 fishermen and 16,000 fishing boats operate in the region, making security monitoring complex.
  • High-Value Infrastructure: The presence of two major ports, several river ports, jetties, and industries makes it a potential target for security threats.
  • Porous Borders: The region’s riverine geography creates challenges in monitoring unauthorized movements, making security exercises like ‘Sagar Kavach’ essential.

The continuous evolution of this exercise is part of a larger strategy to strengthen coastal security. Previous editions, such as the one held on September 25-26, 2024, focused on similar security challenges, demonstrating the Indian Coast Guard’s commitment to proactive defense measures.

RBI to Inject $10 Billion Through Forex Swap to Ease Liquidity Crunch

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has announced a $10 billion foreign exchange (forex) swap to inject liquidity into the banking system and address the prevailing cash crunch. The three-year swap auction is scheduled for February 28, 2025. This action follows a $5 billion forex swap from last month, demonstrating the central bank’s commitment to ensuring liquidity stability. The banking sector is grappling with one of the worst liquidity shortages in more than a decade, partly due to the RBI’s proactive dollar sales aimed at shielding the rupee from volatility.

About the Forex Swap

• The RBI will buy US dollars from banks in exchange for rupees, with a promise to sell the dollars back at a later date.

• This swap will inject rupee liquidity into the banking system, which will help alleviate the liquidity shortfall.

• This is the second forex swap in a short period, following a $5 billion injection through a six-month swap in January.

• This action is anticipated to lower short-term interest rates.

Reason for the Liquidity Crunch

  • India’s banking system is facing a liquidity deficit of approximately ₹2 trillion.
  • March, being the fiscal year-end, is traditionally a difficult period for banks due to increased demand for liquidity.
  • RBI’s dollar sales to protect the rupee from volatility, partly due to US President Donald Trump’s tariff policies, have contributed to the cash crunch.
