IIT Madras launches ‘Nilekani Centre at AI4Bharat’

The Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT Madras) has launched the ‘Nilekani Centre at AI4Bharat” with an aim to advance the state of Indian language technology.

AI4Bharat, is an initiative to build open-source language (Artificial Intelligence) AI for Indian languages.  The centre has made several cutting-edge resources open-source for mass public use and can be downloaded from their webpage.

Kerala govt to launch online cab service 'Kerala Savari'

The Kerala government is set to launch its own e-taxi service named ‘Kerala Savari’ from August. This online taxi hiring service is being rolled out by the state Labour Department which is linking the existing auto-taxi networks in the state.

Aim: To ensure safe and dispute-free travel for the public at affordable rates prevailing in the state.

The new service would be launched in a function to be held at Kanakakkunnu Palace.

Huiyan, who controls largest real estate developer Country Garden Holdings of China has lost half of his wealth drop from nearly $24 billion last year to $11 billion. Savitri Jindal became the chairperson of the Jindal Group, after the death of her husband OP Jindal.

Following this, the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA) was established in 1991. The inaugural World Breastfeeding Week was observed in 1992 to promote the campaign. Initially, around 70 countries used to commemorate the week, while now, it is celebrated by 170 countries.

Zimbabwe launches gold coins to control inflation

Zimbabwe has launched gold coins named “Mosi-oa-Tunya’ to control an inflation spike that has eroded the country’s unstable currency. The move was announced by the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (central bank), which has disbursed 2,000 coins to commercial banks.

Coins have been given the status of liquid asset, which can be easily converted into cash. Coins can be used by Individuals or companies. They can purchase coins from banks and other authorised outlets.

Canadian scholar receives ICCR’s ‘Distinguished Indologist for 2021’ award

A Canadian scholar, Jeffrey Armstrong has been awarded with the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) 2021 Distinguished Indologist for his outstanding contribution in study, teaching and research in any of the fields of Indian Studies.

He is the founder of the Vedic Academy of Science & Arts and author of The Bhagavad Gita comes Alive. The ICCR Distinguished Indologist award was instituted in 2015 during the First World Indology Conference.

Commonwealth Games 2022: Jeremy Lalrinnunga wins Gold in men’s 67 kg weightlifting

19-year-old Jeremy Lalrinnunga had a dream-come-true moment in Birmingham on Sunday, July 31 as he won a Gold medal in the men’s 67kg weightlifting at the Commonwealth Games 2022. In his first appearance in the Games, Jeremy set a new Commonwealth Games record of 300kg overall (140kg snatch and 160kg in clean and jerk). This is the second gold for the country and fifth medal overall. Samoan weightlifter Vaipava Nevo Ioane secured a silver medal with a lift of 293 (127kg + 166kg) and Nigeria’s Edidiong Joseph Umoafia won bronze, 290kg (130kg+160kg).

About the Jeremy Lalrinnunga:

Jeremy Lalrinnunga is an Indian weightlifter from Aizawl, Mizoram. He represented India in the 2018 Summer Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires. He won the gold medal in the Boys’ 62 kg category weightlifting with a lift of 274 kg (124 kg in snatch and 150 kg in clean and jerk). It was India’s first gold medal in the Youth Olympics Games. Jeremy won the silver medal in the Asian weightlifting championship. At the 2019 World Weightlifting Championships, Lalrinnunga finished at 21st rank at the Men’s 67 kg event.

Commonwealth Games 2022: Bindiyarani Devi wins silver medal

Weightlifter Bindyarani Devi won the silver medal in women’s 55 kg event at the Commonwealth Games on Saturday. The Indian lifter managed a total weight of 202 kg. Her best attempt in the snatch was 86kg while she managed a weight of 116 kg in clean & jerk.

Bindyarani was sitting in the third place before her last clean & jerk attempt, but recorded a personal best lift of 116 kg to steal the second spot. The gold medal was won by Nigeria’s Olarinoye who lifted a total of 203 kg. Local favourite Fraer Morrow finished third with a total lift of 198kg (86kg+109kg).

About the Bindyarani Devi Sorokhaibam:

Manipur’s Bindyarani Devi Sorokhaibam (born 27 January 1999) is an Indian weightlifter who competes in the 55 kg weight class. She won gold at the 2019 Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships and silver at the 2021 Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships. She also won gold in clean and jerk at the 2021 World Weightlifting Championships.

Indian weightlifting contingent’s dream run at the the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham continued as India’s 73 Kg representative Achinta Sheuli bagged the gold medal in his event. The 20-year-old claimed the yellow metal with a combined effort of 313 Kilograms (143kg in snatch and 170kg in clean & jerk). India has been performing exceptionally well in weightlifting as the contingent has already bagged 6 medals in this edition.

Malaysia’s Erry Hidayat Muhammad, who gave Sheuli a tough competition, ended as the second-best lifter in the event. He had the best effort of 303kg (138kg 165kg). Canada’s Shad Darsigny was third with a total lift of 298kg (135kg 163kg).

About the Achinta Sheuli:

Achinta Sheuli (born 24 November 2001, Deulpur, West Bengal) is an Indian weightlifter who competes in the 73 kg weight class. He won the silver medal at the 2021 Junior World Weightlifting Championships and is a two-time Commonwealth Championships gold medalist.
