M. Damodaran To Lead Panel on Venture Capital And Private Equity Investments: The Finance Ministry on September 13 constituted an expert committee under the chairmanship of former SEBI chairman Meleveetil Damodaran with a view to identify measures to unravel regulatory hurdles for venture capital and private equity investors. The expert committee will examine and suggest appropriate measures to address regulatory and other issues to enable scaling up investments by Venture Capital and Private Equity Investment, the ministry said.

Why An Expert Committe:
The committee, whose formation was originally announced by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in this year’s Union Budget, has been assigned the task of undertaking a comprehensive systemic study of the ‘end-to-end frictions’ and ‘potential accelerants’ from regulatory policy and taxation to facilitate ‘ease of investing’ as well as encouarage investments into India. The panel has also been asked to suggest measures to fast-track investments into start-ups and sunrise sectors, apart from any other areas that it identifies during the course of its deliberations and interactions with stakeholders. It has also been urged to study global best practices so as to recommend how to emulate them with ‘forward-looking measures and future-ready regulatory practices’.
Who Constitutes The Panel:
Poonam Gupta, the director general of the National Council for Applied Economic Research (NCAER) as well as Former Reserve Bank of India executive director and SEBI member G. Mahalingam have been drafted in as members of the panel, along with former GST member of the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs D.P. Nagendra Kumar. The terms of reference set by the Department of Economic Affairs in the Finance Ministry for the six-member committee, also include a review of the issues and compliance requirements faced by investors, with suggestions to simplify the state of affairs so as to grow the ‘alternative capital’ participation in the private equity and venture capital industry.

Senior Advocate Mukul Rohatgi to be next Attorney General for India: Senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi is set to be appointed as the fourteenth Attorney General of India after KK Venugopal vacates the post, said sources.

This will be Rohatgi’s second tenure as an AG, after he served the post for the first time between June 2014 and June 2017. At the end of June this year, AG Venugopal’s tenure was extended for a period of three months or “until further orders”. This extension is set to expire on September 30.

People aware of the matter said Rohatgi gave his consent for assuming the top post last week following a request from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO). About the Mukul Rohatgi:
Mukul Rohatgi is the son of former Delhi High Court judge, Justice Awadh Behari Rohatgi, who practiced under Yogesh Kumar Sabharwal, former CJI in the High Court before starting his own legal practice. Rohatgi completed law at Government Law College in Mumbai and started practicing law straight after college.
He was designated as a senior counsel by Delhi HC in 1993 and was later appointed as Additional Solicitor General of India in 1999. The 66-year-old senior advocate Mukul Rohatgi has represented several high-profile and crucial cases in the court. He represented the 2002 Gujarat riots case where he appeared before the court for the government of Gujarat.
Rohatgi also fought the high-profile case of Shahrukh Khan’s son Aryan Khan’s alleged drug case. He appeared for his bail plea, scheduled to come up before the Bombay High Court.

Legendary Telugu actor Krishnam Raju passes away: Legendary Telugu Actor and former Union Minister Krishnam Raju Garu passed away aged 83 on Sunday morning in Hyderabad. Known as the ‘rebel star’ of Telugu cinema Garu is also the uncle of famous Telugu actor and Bahubali star Prabhas. Raju acted in more than 180 films and was also a recipient of five Filmfare south awards as well as three Nandi awards. His most famous works include Jeevana Tarangalu, Krishnaveni, and Bhakta Kannappa among others.

- Krishnam Raju Garu also served as the Union Minister for State in various ministries in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee-led BJP government in the centre between 2000 and 2002. He was elected to the Kakinada and Narasapuram constituencies in the 12th and 13th Lok Sabha for the BJP. He made his debut with `Chilaka Gorinka’ in 1966 but `Bhakta Kannappa’ and `Bobbili Brahmanna’ brought him fame. JIMEX 2022: India and Japan Begin Joint Naval exercise at Bay of Bengal- The sixth edition of Japan-India Maritime Exercise 2022 (JIMEX 22) hosted by Indian Navy began in the Bay of Bengal on Sunday. JIMEX, a series of maritime exercises that commenced in January 2012, is conducted by the Indian Navy and the Japan Maritime Self-Defence Force. The last edition of JIMEX was conducted in October 2021. The Japan Maritime Self Defence Force (JMSDF) ships have participated in the Japan-India Maritime Bilateral Exercise – Jimex 2022. JMSDF ships were led by R Adm Hirata Toshiyuki, Commander Escort Flotilla Four, and Indian Naval ships by R Adm Sanjay Bhalla, Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Fleet.
