World Toilet Day 2022: Key messages

Sanitation must withstand climate change. Toilets and sanitation systems must be built or adapted to cope with extreme weather events, so that services always function and groundwater is protected.
Sanitation action is urgent. We are seriously off track to ensure safe toilets for all by 2030. With only eight years left, the world needs to work four times faster to meet our promise.
World Toilet Day: History
It was on this day in 2001 when Jack Sim, a philanthropist from Singapore founded the World Toilet Organization and declared the day as World Toilet Day. The efforts to draw attention to the sanitation crises were given focus by the UN in 2010 when they officially recognised the right to water and sanitation as human rights. In 2013, the Singapore Government and the World Toilet Organization collaborated to create Singapore’s UN resolution – Sanitation for all. This resolution urged group efforts to address the global sanitation crisis. Following the adoption of the resolution by 122 nations at the 67th session of the UN General Assembly in New York, World Toilet Day was designated as an official UN day.

The Department of Drinking Water & Sanitation (DDWS), Ministry of Jal Shakti, under the Swachh Bharat Mission (Grameen) is organizing ‘Swachhta Run’ across rural India, to mark the World Toilet Day.
- States & UTs directed to conduct the “Swachhta Run” at the Gram Panchayat level to celebrate World Toilet Day, 2022.
- Local elected representatives/sports persons/celebrities/influencers to flag off the “Swachhta Run” to commemorate World Toilet Day, 2022.

INS Trikand participated in ‘Sea Sword 2’ counter-terrorism drill
INS Trikand participated in ‘Sea Sword 2’ counter-terrorism drill: The Combined Maritime Forces led Operation “Sea Sword 2” in the Northwest Arabian Sea included the INS Trikand. The operation was held to prevent narcotics trade & stop smuggling entities from using the seas for their nefarious activities. The Indian Navy’s long range maritime patrol aircraft also participated in the operation and provided air support. Earlier, the 26th edition of the multinational maritime exercise “MALABAR 22” culminated in Japan on November 15th.

Earlier, the MD or executive director of a public sector undertaking (PSU) bank was eligible for a maximum tenure of 5 years or 60 years whichever was earlier. This is also applicable for whole-time directors of all Central Public Sector Enterprises (CPSEs). Now, The term for the appointment has been extended to 10 years, from the earlier 5 years, subject to superannuation age of 60 years, as per government notification of 17 November.
What Has Been Said:
A whole-time director, including the managing director, shall devote his whole time to the affairs of the nationalised bank and shall hold office for such initial term not exceeding five years and extendable up to a total period, including the initial term, not exceeding 10 years, as the central government may, after consultation with the Reserve Bank, specify and shall be eligible for re-appointment,” the notification said.
The Importance Of This Move:
The decision of the government would help banks to retain the talent who rise to the ladder of whole-time directors at a very early age of 45-50 years.
Presently, there are many whole-time directors of PSU banks who entered the board at a young age. They would gain from the modification.

Cambridge Dictionary: With 2022 coming to an end, the Cambridge Dictionary team has announced their Word of the Year for 2022. And it is ‘homer’, which is described as “short for home run : a point scored in baseball when you hit the ball, usually out of the playing field, and are able to run around all the bases at one time to the starting base,” as per Cambridge Dictionary. The word ”homer” was searched for nearly 75,000 times during the first week of May 2022, when it was an answer in the word game Wordle. In the context of the game, ”homer” doesn’t refer to the Greek poet and author, or a character from Simpson, but refers to an informal American English word for a ‘home run’ in baseball.

About The Donyi-Polo Airport:
The name of the airport reflects the traditions and rich cultural heritage of Arunachal Pradesh and the age-old indigenous reverence to the Sun (‘Donyi’) and the Moon (‘Polo’) in the state.
The foundation stone for this airport was laid by the PM in 2019.
