World Chess Day 2022 celebrates globally on 20 July
20 July is observed as World Chess Day. The idea to celebrate this day as international chess day was proposed by UNESCO, and it has been celebrated as such since 1966 after it was established by FIDE. The organization has now grown to encompass 199 countries in the form of National Chess Federations as affiliate members.
History of World Chess Day:
On 12 December 2019, the General Assembly proclaimed 20 July as World Chess Day to mark the date of the establishment of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) in Paris in 1924. It is believed that the game of chess, which was once known as “Chaturanga”, dates back almost 1500 years and originated in India. It later made its way to Persia, where it flourished under Arab rule and eventually spread to Southern Europe. In Europe, chess evolved into its current form during the 15th century. It changed into a modern sport by the end of the 15th century.
International Moon Day observed on 20 July
International Moon Day is being celebrated for the very first time on July 20, 2022. On December 9, 2021, the United Nations General Assembly recognized the proposal submitted by the Moon Village Association and several other groups within the organization. The application to observe International Moon Day was submitted to the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA). The International Moon Day 2022 will be observed as an annual event and general public celebrations will be held all over the world.

The theme of the International Moon Day is ‘Lunar Exploration Coordination & Sustainability’. The aim of the inaugural celebration theme is to educate people about the importance of sustainable lunar exploration.
International Moon Day: History
An application by submitted by the Moon Village Association at the 64th UN-COPUOS Session stating to observe July 20 as International Moon Day. The day was selected to commemorate the first human landing on the moon done on July 20, 1969, with the United States’ Apollo 11 mission. On December 9 2021, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the resolution stating that July 20 will be observed every year as International Moon Day.
Australia Tennis star Lleyton Hewitt inducted into Hall of Fame
Two-time Grand Slam champion and former world number one, Lleyton Hewitt was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame. Before Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic ascended to the top of the sport, Hewitt held the top spot for 80 weeks, good for 10th-most in history. Even when those stars made their mark.
The Aussie icon won his first ATP title in Adelaide in 1998 and his last in 2014 at the Hall of Fame Open, defeating Ivo Karlovic. Hewitt won the 2001 US Open and 2002 Wimbledon title.
Kerala becomes first state to have its own internet service
The Kerala Fibre Optic Network (K-FON) has received the Internet Service Provider (ISP) license from the Department of Telecommunications.
With this, Kerala has become the first and only state in the country to have its own internet service.
The KFON is envisaged to provide free internet to BPL families and 30,000 government offices.
The previous Left government had declared internet connection as a basic right and launched the Rs 1,548-crore KFON project in 2019.
Rajasthan gets AI-Powered chatbot for fast disposal of cases in Lok Adalat
National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) Chairman, Uday Umesh Lalit has launched the country’s first AI-powered digital Lok Adalat during the 18th All India Legal Services Authorities’ meet held in Jaipur, Rajasthan.
The digital Lok Adalat by Rajasthan State Legal Services Authority (RSLSA) was designed and developed by Jupitice Justice Technologies (technology partner).

Digit Insurance launches ‘pay as you drive’ for motor insurance
Go Digit General Insurance has launched an add-on feature for motor insurance Own Damage policies, named ‘Pay as you Drive’.
Customers who drive less than 10,000 Km per year on an average, will now pay less with this add-on. Digit will use odometer reading, telematics data and annual kilometer opted to give this discount (up to 25%).
IRDAI has also permitted to the general insurance companies to introduce such tech-enabled concepts in motor OD policies.
Kotak launches automation of vehicle inspection for insurance renewals
Kotak Mahindra General Insurance has launched an automation of vehicle inspection for insurance renewals with Artificial Intelligence based technology.
The company has partnered with Inspektlabs to automate the vehicle inspection process.
Aim: Help in the renewal process as well as to detect fraud thereby aiding the underwriting process.
During policy renewals process, the customers can capture photos or videos of their vehicle and upload them on the cloud-based App.
Farmers’ average income grew 1.3-1.7x between FY18 and FY22: SBI study
As per the SBI study, the average income of farmers between FY 2017-18 and 2021-22, has been increased in bracket of 1.3 -1.7 times across India.
Income from allied and non-farm: 1.4-1.8 times(growth).
Some crops like soybean in Maharashtra and cotton in Karnataka, incomes have in fact doubled during the same time. The study is based on primary data, contains granular data of various crops from agri-intensive branches and analyses the change in income of farmers.
Mairaj Ahmad Khan becomes first Indian to win gold in men’s Skeet at ISSF
Two-time Olympian, Mairaj Ahmad Khan has created history by becoming the first Indian shooter to win the gold medal in the men’s skeet event at 2022 ISSF World Cup in Changwon, South Korea.
He has recorded 37 hits out of a possible 40 in the final to win gold.
Minsu Kim from South Korea has bagged silver medal, while Ben Llewellin of Great Britain won bronze.
Women’s 50m rifle 3 positions team: Anjum Moudgil, Sift Kaur Samra and Ashi Chouksey won the bronze medal.
Indian Grandmaster, Aravindh Chithambaram wins tournament in Spain
Indian Grandmaster Aravindh Chithambaram has won the 41st Villa De Benasque International Chess Open title, after defeating Robert Hovhannisyan (Armenia) and Raunak Sadhwani on the basis of tie-break score.
Chithambaram, Hovhannisyan and Sadhwani finished on eight points from 10 rounds along with seven others. Raunak Sadhwani has finished in third place behind the Armenian. Chithambaram is also a former national champion.

West Indies Cricketers Lendl Simmons & Denesh Ramdin Announce Retirement
Former West Indies skipper Denesh Ramdin announced his retirement from international cricket with immediate effect. He played his last match for West Indies in a T20I in December 2019. However, he will continue to play franchise cricket. He has played 74 Tests, 139 ODIs and 71 T20Is. He started out in Test cricket, making his debut against Sri Lanka in Colombo in July 2005. He played a part in West Indies T20 World Cup triumphs in 2012 and 2016.
Meanwhile, West Indies batter Lendl Simmons also announced his retirement from international cricket. His decision came to the fore after his Caribbean Premier League franchise Trinbago Knight Riders posted a congratulatory message for the player. Simmons made his international debut way back in 2008 in an ODI against Pakistan at Faisalabad. Thereafter, he made his T20I and Test debuts in 2007 and 2009 respectively. In 8 Tests, 68 ODIs and 68 T20Is, the right-handed batter scored 278, 1958 and 1527 runs respectively, with the help of 2 centuries and 25 half-centuries.
