National Broadcasting Day 2022 celebrates on 23rd July
In India, the “National Broadcasting Day” is observed on July 23 every year, to celebrate the radio, which has been an important part in people’s life in India, both as an easy medium of entertainment along with news. The day aims to remind Indian citizens about the impact of radio on our lives. Akashvani or All India Radio (AIR) is India’s homegrown national radio broadcasting service which reaches millions of homes across the nation. AIR is a division of Prasar Bharati which was previously under government control but is an autonomous body now, set up by an Act of parliament.
It is celebrated because it was on this day in the year 1927, that the first-ever radio broadcast in the country went on the air from the Bombay Station under a private company, the Indian Broadcasting Company.
Significance
Indian radio had an enormous impact on the creation of an independent India. Both the Azad Hind Radio of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose and the Congress Radio helped rouse Indians against the British before independence. Akashvani was also instrumental in helping Bangladesh gain independence from an oppressive Pakistan in the 1971 war. This makes National Broadcasting Day 2022 a highly significant event for our nation.
Filmmaker KP Kumaran honoured with JC Daniel Award 2022
Malayalam filmmaker K P Kumaran won the JC Daniel Award, the highest honour in Malayalam cinema, for his comprehensive contribution to the film industry. The award comprises of a cash prize of Rs 5 lakh, a citation, and a plaque. The 2021 jury included singer P Jayachandran, director Sibi Malayil, film academy chairman Ranjith, and Rani George, the principal secretary of the Department of Cultural Affairs.
The filmmaker made his directorial debut with Athithi in 1975 and earned fame for his films like Rugmini, which won the National Award for Best feature film in Malayalam and the Kerala State Film Award in 1989. He is also known for films like Thenthulli, Laxmivijayam and Thottam. The filmmaker’s last directorial venture was 2020’s Gramavrikshathile Kuyil. The film chronicles the life of Kumaran Asan, a philosopher, poet, social reformer and industrialist.
About the JC Daniel Award:
JC Daniel Award is Kerala’s highest award in Malayalam cinema. It is presented annually by the Kerala State Chalachitra Academy, a nonprofit institution under the Department of Cultural Affairs. Instituted in 1992, the award is given to honour the recipients for their outstanding contribution to Malayalam cinema. The award was created to commemorate the contribution of Indian filmmaker JC Daniel, who is often regarded as the father of Malayalam cinema.
Since its inception, the award has been bestowed on 27 individuals. Film distributor and producer TE Vasudevan was its first recipient. Singer P Jayachandran was the latest recipient – 2020.
WHO Report: India was top remittance recipient in 2021 receiving $87 billion
India received 87 billion dollars in remittances in 2021, the top remittance recipient, and way ahead of countries like China and Mexico, according to a World Health Organisation report released on Wednesday.
Key points of the report:
China ($53 billion), Mexico ($53 billion), the Philippines ($36 billion) and Egypt ($33 billion) were the top five nations in the list. The United States was the largest source country for remittances in 2020, followed by the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Switzerland. Remittances increase or maintain consumer spending and soften the blow of economic hardship, such as during the COVID-19 pandemic.
About the WHO World report:
The first WHO World report on the health of refugees and migrants said that today about one in eight people in the world, some one billion, are migrants.
The report by the specialised agency of the United Nations responsible for international public health said that in 2021 the top five remittance recipients in current US dollars were India, China, Mexico, the Philippines and Egypt. With $87 billion, India was the top remittance recipient among low- and middle-income countries, as per 2021 estimates, way ahead of China and Mexico’s 53 billion dollars, the Philippines (36 billion dollars) and Egypt (33 billion dollars).
The economic recovery in 2021 followed the resilience of remittance flows seen in 2020, which declined by a modest 1.7 per cent to USD 549 billion in the face of one of the deepest global recessions.
PM Modi unveiled India’s first passenger drone, Varuna
This drone is capable of carrying one person, equipment, or supplies from one moving warship to another with the help of autonomous take-off and landing features. It can also be used for medical evacuation.

Rajarshi Gupta appointed as Managing Director of ONGC Videsh
Rajarshi Gupta, has appointed as MD of ONGC Videsh Ltd, is an overseas investment arm of state-owned Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC).
He has replaced Alok Gupta who was superannuated in June 2022. He has more than 33 years of experience in supervisory, managerial and strategic planning capacities in domestic and international operations of ONGC and ONGC Videsh. He has also served as Executive Director – Chief of Corporate Strategy & Planning in ONGC.
Egypt’s Seif Ahmed appointed as acting president of FIH
The International Hockey Federation (FIH) has appointed Seif Ahmed (Egypt) as its acting president after the resignation of Indian administrator Narinder Batra from the post.
Batra has resigned as FIH president and also quit as chief of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA). He also gave up his International Olympic Committee (IOC) membership which was directly linked with his IOA position. Batra became the president of FIH in 2016.
NDB approves USD 875 million for development in Brazil, China and India
The New Development Bank has approved USD 875 million for water, sanitation, ecotourism and transport. Investments will support the Brazil, China and India towards the Sustainable Development Goals.
- Brazil: $ 300 million for water supply and sewage collection
- India: $ 79 million for the Meghalaya Ecotourism Infrastructure Development Project.
- China: EUR 265 million for Lanzhou Zhongchuan International Airport and RMB 805 million for Xi’an Xianyang International Airport.
NITI Aayog releases report on Digital Bank
The Niti Aayog has released its report on digital banks, offering a template and roadmap for licencing and regulatory regimes.

- Issuing a restricted digital bank licence.

Himachal Pradesh connects all VLTD vehicles equipped with ERSS
Himachal Pradesh has become the first state in India to connect all registered commercial vehicles equipped with Vehicle Location Tracking Device (VLTD) with Emergency Response Support System (ERSS).
Vehicles can be tracked anywhere in the country through VLTD. It will be monitored by both the police and the transport department. CM also introduced the facility of panic button for the safety of women and children in public vehicles.

India, the UK sign MoU on Mutual Recognition of Academic Qualification
India and United Kingdom signed an agreement to provide student mobility and academic collaboration between higher education institutions (HEIs).

In May 2021, a comprehensive Roadmap to 2030 was adopted for enhanced bilateral cooperation between the two countries.
