International Day of Sign Languages observed on 23 September: International Day of Sign Languages (IDSL) is celebrated annually across the world on 23 September every year along with International Week of the Deaf. The day is a unique opportunity to support and protect the linguistic identity and cultural diversity of all deaf people and other sign language users. Sign language gives people, who are hard of hearing, a medium to converse. As the name suggests, this day aims to spread awareness regarding the importance of sign language in the realization of the human rights of people who are deaf.

International Day of Sign Languages: Significance
Sign languages are visual languages that pass your message through the use of gestures or symbols. Each country has its own sign language, for eg- in the US, it is American sign language whereas in the UK it is British sign language. The International Day of Sign Language throws light on the importance of preserving this medium of communication for deaf people. The day also gives a stage for the development of sign language. It also focuses on the internationally agreed development goals and the achievements associated with them.
International Day of Sign Languages: History
The World Federation of the Deaf (WFD) first requested an international day to recognize the importance of sign languages. On December 19, 2017, the United Nations passed the resolution and declared September 23rd International Day of Sign Languages. This date commemorates the establishment of WFD in 1951. The first International Day of Sign Languages was observed in 2018 under the theme, “With Sign Language, Everyone is Included!”

Advisor for Prisons, Printing & Stationery, H. Haiying launched the Prison staff Attendance App at the District Jail Kohima. The mobile app was initiated by the State Prison Department in collaboration with Excellogics Technology Solution Private Limited.

About the biometric attendance system:
- Briefing on the initiative, Mr. Sharma said, the biometric attendance system which has been implemented in the state has its own problems and with this view, they came up with a new concept of introducing an attendance app through a QR code.
- This is a first step towards ensuring that the attendance in the jail is proper and keeping track of the staff who is attending the duty or not.
- Kohima jail has started implementing the system while Dimapur jail and other five jails of the state are being given the training and they will be asked to implement it in a week’s time.
- The Department has decentralized the application and exuded hope that it will deliver good results for the Department but also for the entire state of Nagaland.

Hero MotoCorp tie-up with HPCL to set up EV charging infrastructure: Hero MotoCorp has joined hands with Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd to set up charging infrastructure for electric two-wheelers in the country.
As a part of the initiative, the two companies will first establish charging infrastructure at Hindustan Petroleum Corporation’s (HPCL) existing network of stations, with the likelihood of subsequently broadening the collaboration for supplementary business opportunities.
