Leading Economists Expects Q1 GDP Growth At 13-15.7%
Leading economists have pencilled in a high 13-15.7 per cent uptick in the economy in the first quarter of 2022-23 with an upward bias. Soumya Kanti Ghosh, the group chief economic adviser at State Bank of India, on Tuesday said he expects the GDP to clip past 15.7 per cent in the first quarter with more chances of the final numbers printing in higher, while Aditi Nayar, the chief economist at the rating agency Icra, said the economy will grow much lower at 13 per cent in the June quarter.
Recent Trend:
While GDP contracted by 23.9 per cent in June 2020 due to the first wave of the pandemic, the same had given a higher boost in June 2021 clipping at 20.1 per cent, despite the period being more devastating in terms of loss of lives from the second wave of COVID-19. The Reserve Bank-led monetary policy committee in the August 5 policy review projected the economy to grow 16.2 per cent in the April-June quarter.
Other Prospects:
The high base effect along with the impact of the heatwave on wheat output, geo-political issues and elevated commodity prices on demand/margins will temper the pace of growth in Q1 at 13 per cent, Nayar of Icra said, adding the gross value added to come in at 12.6 per cent. Icra expects sectoral growth to be driven by the services sector which will log in 17-19 per cent growth, followed by the industry 9-11 per cent.
World Gujarati Language Day 2022: 24 August
World Gujarati Language Day 2022 is celebrated on 24th August every year. The day is celebrated to commemorate the birth anniversary of the great Gujarati writer Veer Narmad. “Gujarati Diwas” is celebrated because poet Narmad was considered the creator of Gujarati language. He made Gujarati literature international.
Who is Veer Narmad?
- Poet Veer Narmad was born on August 24, 1833 in Surat, Gujarat. He was from a Brahmin family. His full name was Narmadashankar Lalshankar Dave. His father Lalshankar lived in Mumbai. Narmad received his secondary education from the Elphinstone Institute. Earlier he wrote his compositions under the name Narmad. Narmad got married at the age of 11. After his primary education in Surat, he continued his education in Mumbai. Then, on the orders of his father-in-law, he came to Surat to take care of the family and started working as a school teacher for a salary of 15 rupees.
- After this he began to explain literature. Then he was working as a teacher in Mumbai. Narmad was a playwright, essayist, speaker, lexicographer and reformer under the British Raj whose poem “Jai Jai Garavi Gujarat” is now the state anthem of the Indian state.
World Gujarati Language Day Significance
People pay tribute to the poet who contributed significantly to the speech by also making a new Gujarati dictionary amid extreme tribulations. The dictionary contains words of all dialects with their diverse usages. Since then, looking at the historic Narmad philosophy, Vishwa Gujarati Diwas is observed annually to dedicate a day to the language and to the Gujarati culture.
U.K’s Growth -11% In 2020 Worst In 300 Years
Britain’s economy shrank by a record-breaking 9.9% in 2020, new figures by the Office of National Statistics show, highlighting the impact of Covid-19 restrictions, employment uncertainty and reduced demand, with limited growth in the final quarter narrowly avoiding a double-dip recession.
KEY FACTS
The 9.9% annual contraction is more than twice that seen in 2009 in the aftermath of the global financial crisis, and narrowly worse than the 9.7% slump during the crisis of 1921. The U.K. economy contracted by 9.9% in 2020, its largest annual contraction since the Great Frost of 1709, as the coronavirus pandemic ravaged economic activity.
Though the economy grew 1% in the last quarter when looser restrictions boosted the services industry, overall output was down 7.8% from the last quarter of 2019, the ONS said. The slump is twice that of the 2009 financial crisis and is possibly the worst in 300 years, with models from the Bank of England suggesting a decline of 13% during the Great Frost of 1709.
Some Positives:
While there are some positive signs of the economy’s resilience over the winter, we know that the current lockdown continues to have a significant impact on many people and businesses,” Rishi Sunak said, adding that his focus “remains fixed on doing everything we can to protect jobs, businesses and livelihoods. Strict public health measures and a resurgent wave of Covid-19 infections driven by a dangerous new variant of the virus have the U.K. economy likely falling again in 2021. While the U.K. has the worst coronavirus death rate in the world, it also has one of the best vaccination records, priming the country for an economic comeback.
