International Conference on Chemistry and Applications of Soft Materials

The CSIR-National Institute for Interdisciplinary Science and Technology (CSIR-NIIST), Thiruvananthapuram, will host an International Conference on Chemistry and Applications of Soft Materials (CASM 2022) from Monday to Wednesday as part of the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav celebrations to mark 75th year of Independence. Discussions on a variety of subjects, including self-assembly and supramolecular materials, soft material chemistry, physics, rheology, and photophysics, responsive and smart materials, gels, liquid crystals, polymers, macromolecules and framework materials, and functional nanomaterials, as well as soft material applications in electronics and energy, will take place at the conference.

Vodafone Idea has appointed Akshaya Moondra as new chief executive officer with effect from August 19, 2022 for a period of three years. He will succeed Ravinder Takkar.

Takkar will continue to be a non-executive and non-independent director of the company post completion of his term as the MD & CEO.

Moondra has over 30 years of international experience and over 14 years’ experience in the Indian telecom sector.

Danish cyclist, Jonas Vingegaard wins his first Tour de France title

Jonas Vingegaard (Denmark) has defeated two-time defending champion, Tadej Pogacar of Slovenia by three minutes and 34 seconds to win his first Tour de France title.

Last year, Vingegaard has finished second after Pogacar. The Tour de France is a prestigious multistage bike race, held annually in France. The race, also known as Le Tour or La Grande Boucle, includes 21 stages and covers 3,328 kilometers in 2022.

Amit Shah launches e-FIR system in Gujarat

Union home minister, Amit Shah has launched an e-FIR filing system in Gandhinagar to enable citizens to file FIRs online, without visiting a police station.

With the help of this system, citizens will not need to go the police station to register a complaint for a vehicle theft or mobile phone theft. The e-FIR service has been linked with the Gujarat state police CCTV command and control centre.

Neeraj Chopra Wins Silver in World Athletics Championship 2022

India’s Neeraj Chopra, the Tokyo 2020 Olympics javelin throw champion, won the silver medal at the World Athletics Championships 2022 in Oregon on Saturday to end India’s 19-year-long wait for a medal at the worlds. In his fourth attempt, he managed to record a throw of 88.13m, with this historic performance he became the only second Indian Athlete to win a medal at World Championship, after Anju Bobby George who won a bronze medal in Long Jump at the 2003 World Championship held in Paris. Former President Ram Nath Kovind congratulated Neeraj Chopra for bringing glory to the country, with this Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Sports Minister Anurag Singh Thakur also congratulated him on his win. Anurag Singh Thakur specially mentioned in his tweet that Neeraj Chopra has won a medal at every Global event he participated in.

Needing to shatter his personal best and the national record of 89.94m, set at the Stockholm Diamond League last month, for a shot at gold, Neeraj Chopra posted 82.39m and 86.37m with his second and third attempts, respectively and his fourth and final attempt was 88.13m. The Indian, however, was still short of a medal position after the third series of throws. He was awarded the silver medal as the gold medal was bagged by Anderson Peters who recorded a throw of 90.54m in his final attempt before Neeraj. Meanwhile, the bronze medal was bagged by Czech Republic’s Jakub Vadlejch.

Neeraj Chopra: Athletic Career

In 2013 Neeraj Chopra participated in his first international athletics event in Ukraine as World Youth championships. In 2014 he participated in youth Olympics qualification where he won a silver medal by recording a throw of 70m. In 2017 he participated in the Asian Athletic Championship where he achieved a gold medal. In the 2018, Commonwealth Games he won a gold medal and became the first Indian player to win in Commonwealth games. In 2020 he participated in the Tokyo Olympics, a remarkable success in Neeraj Chopra’s career. On 4th August 2021, Neeraj Chopra made his debut at the Olympics representing India in the Japan National stadium. Neeraj Chopra won the gold medal in the final event on 7th August by recording a throw of 87.58 m in his second attempt and became the first Indian Olympian to win a gold medal in athletics. Neeraj Chopra also became the second Indian to win an individual Olympic gold medal after Abhinav Bindra.

ONGC sign gas sale agreements with GAIL, AGCL for Tripura' Khubal field

The Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) has signed a gas-selling agreement with GAIL India and Assam Gas Company Ltd (AGCL) at Khubal under Panisagar of North Tripura.

The ONGC will supply 50,000 standard cubic metres (per day) of gas to GAIL and AGCL and a total 0.1 million standard cubic metres per day (MSCMD) gas will be supplied from ONGC’s Khubal gas collecting station. Khubal station would have a capacity to process 0.44 MSCMD of gas.

China launches Wentian lab module to its permanent space station

China has successfully launched the Wentian laboratory module (23-tonne), second space module to its permanent space station.

This has been launched on the Long March 5B from the Wenchang Space Launch Center on the southern island of Hainan. This module will help astronauts to carry out their scientific experiments, along with the other lab module. First space module was Tianhe, was launched in April 2021 and the third module, Mengtian, will be launched soon.

YES Bank has appointed Rama Subramaniam Gandhi as an additional independent director of the bank for a period of five years,  effective from July 23, 2022.
