A new book titled “Listen to Your Heart: The London Adventure” authored by Ruskin Bond, was published by Penguin Random House India (PRHI) on Ruskin Bond’s 88th birthday (19th May 2022).

The book highlighted how he spent four years of his life in the Channel Islands and England. Ruskin Bond was born in 1934, in Kasauli, and he grew up in Dehradun, Shimla, Jamnagar, and New Delhi.

GIC buys 7.5% stake in Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail

GIC (sovereign wealth fund) is acquiring a 7.5% equity stake in Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail (ABFRL) for Rs 2,195 crore. The investment will be made by way of preferential equity and warrants.

In the first tranche, the GIC will invest Rs 770 crore, while the rest amount of Rs 1,425 crore would be infused within 18 months.

After the investment, Aditya Birla Group will hold a controlling stake of 51.9% in the company.

UCO Bank has signed a co-lending agreement with NBFC Paisalo Digital Limited for agriculture business to capitalize the underbanked and under-serviced population.

The tie-up will give a boost to the agriculture advance of the bank and it is a win-win situation for the bank as well as the NBFC. The Government of India aims to help agriculture and other small borrowers who are the backbone of the Indian economy.

Mahagram (Rural NEO Bank) has signed a partnership with the IndusInd Bank to digitize the nation’s payment ecosystem and provide a wider scope to transact for its customers in rural India.

Aim: To boost financial inclusion, encourage socio-economic development, mitigate the risks of a shadow economy, and accelerate the growth of a cashless society.

Mahagram was founded in 2015 to enable rural women to save money at the local Kirana stores.

The World Economic Forum’s (WEF) has released the Travel & Tourism Development Index which comprises 117 countries.

India is the top scorer in South Asia and placed at 54th (fall by 8 rankings). The WEF’s index has shown various positive trends but the tourism and travel industry is still facing hurdles to recover properly.

Param Porul supercomputer inaugurated at NIT Tiruchirappalli

In a joint initiative of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and the Department of Science and Technology (DST), a state-of-the-art Supercomputer, PARAM PORUL was inaugurated at NIT Tiruchirappalli on May 25, 2022. NIT, Tiruchirappalli has been carrying out research in the areas of societal interest such as Health, Agriculture, Weather, and Financial Services. Param Porul supercomputing facility is established under phase two of the national supercomputing mission to facilitate computational research.

About the Param Porul:

PARAM PORUL system is based on Direct Contact Liquid Cooling technology to obtain a high power usage effectiveness. This also helps in reducing the operational cost. Multiple applications from various scientific domains such as Weather and Climate, Bioinformatics, Computational Chemistry, Molecular Dynamics, Material Sciences, Computational Fluid Dynamics etc. have been installed on the system for the benefit of researchers.

The system is equipped with a mix of CPU nodes, GPU nodes, High Memory nodes, High throughput storage, and high-performance Infiniband interconnect to cater to the computing needs of various scientific and engineering applications.

Kolkata Becomes First Metro City To Get Its Biodiversity Register

Kolkata is the first metro city in the country to prepare a detailed register of biodiversity, mayor Firhad Hakim said. Kolkata Municipal Corporation released the People’s Biodiversity Register (PBR), a document with details about the floral and faunal varieties in the city as well as its land use and human activities. The document is prepared by the biodiversity management committee (BMC) of the civic body under the supervision of the state biodiversity board and with help from NGOs. Chandigarh and Indore are other important cities which have prepared the document.

Key points of the report:

The 520-page biodiversity register of Kolkata, a copy of which is with The Telegraph, has documented 138 species of trees,  26 types of Chinese vegetable, 33 species of medicinal plants and about 100 other plant species.

The report also documented around 290 animal species, including about 70 species of butterflies, 47 varieties of fish, 84 varieties of birds and 22 varieties of mammals, based on the data sourced from 144 wards in the city. The report covers hotspots such as the East Kolkata Wetlands and Rabindra Sarobar,” said Debasish Kumar, mayoral council member and also chairman of the city’s biodiversity management committee

SC appoints 3-member Committee to oversee the functioning of AIFF

The Supreme Court (SC) has appointed a three-member Committee of Administrators (CoA) to oversee the running of the All India Football Federation (AIFF) till elections are held to the game’s governing body in the country and the adoption of its constitution in accordance with the National Sports Code and model guidelines, led by former apex court judge AR Dave.

KEY POINTS:

The COA will include two previous members — Dr SY Qureshi, former Chief Election Commissioner, and Bhaskar Ganguly, former captain of the Indian Football Team, in addition to Retired Justice Dave, according to a bench of Justices DY Chandrachud, Surya Kant, and PS Narasimha.

The top court stated that the current state of affairs in the AIFF is not conducive to the federation’s legitimate governance. It instructed the CoA to assume control of the AIFF immediately and oversee the AIFF’s approval of the constitution.

Captain Abhilasha Barak becomes first woman combat pilot in Indian Army

Captain Abhilasha Barak from Haryana, has become the first woman officer to join the Army Aviation Corps as a combat aviator after successfully completing her training.

She was awarded the coveted wings along with 36 other army pilots by the DG and Colonel Commandant of Army Aviation in Nashik. She was commissioned into the Indian Army from the Officers Training Academy, Chennai in 2018. She has been assigned to the second flight of 2072 Army Aviation Squadron.
