Veteran Assamese Actor Nipon Goswami Passes Away: Nipon Goswami, a well-known Assamese actor, passed away on Oct. 27 at the age of 80 in Guwahati’s Nemcare Hospital after a protracted illness. The veteran actor had been suffering from heart related ailments for a while. However, after his condition deteriorated suddenly, he was rushed to the hospital on October 24.

Indian Army Celebrates 76th Infantry Day On 27 October

Indian Army Celebrates 76th Infantry Day On 27 October: Today is 76th Infantry Day and the day will be observed at Army establishments across the country with special focus in Kashmir where Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and LG Manoj Sinha will be participating besides senior Army, police and civil administration officials here at Old Air Field. To celebrate the 76th Infantry Day this year on October 27, soldiers are organising four simultaneous bike rallies from all cardinal directions, Wellington (Tamil Nadu), Jammu (Jammu and Kashmir), Shillong (Meghalaya), and Ahmedabad (Gujarat). The rally started on October 16 and will cover the travel across the country, culminating at the National War Memorial on Infantry Day.

History

  • The date October 27 was chosen for the occasion as it was on this day that the first Indian infantry soldiers defended the country’s territory from external aggression.
  • After the Maharaja of Jammu and Kashmir, Hari Singh, signed the instrument of accession, on October 26, 1947, the region became part of the Indian dominion. Soon, the first Battalion of the Sikh Regiment reached the Srinagar airbase to fight against Pakistani invaders.
  • Pakistan’s regular soldiers had entered Jammu and Kashmir on October 22 disguised as tribals and volunteers from the tribal areas of North West Frontier Province (NWFP). The primary aim of the group was to forcibly occupy the state and integrate it with Pakistan.
  • After the initial resistance by the state forces of J&K, Indian troops were called in to ward off the Pakistani invaders on October 27 after the Maharaja signed the instrument of accession.
  • The first Indian battalion commanded by Lt Col Dewan Ranjit Rai was intimated on October 26 night. They moved from Gurgaon where they were stationed to Palam airport in New Delhi and were airlifted to Srinagar the next morning where they saved the airfield from the Pakistani invaders.
  • After securing the Srinagar airfield, the Indian soldiers rushed towards Baramulla to stop the invaders in their tracks. Lt Col Rai laid down his life in this action and was posthumously awarded the second-highest gallantry award of the country, Maha Vir Chakra.

IAF: Western Air Command won Air Force Lawn Tennis Championship

Air Force Lawn Tennis Championship 2022-23: Western Air Command, Indian Air Force (IAF) won the Air Force Lawn Tennis Championship 2022-23 held at Head Quarter MC, Vayusena Nagar, Nagpur. The final match of team Championship was played between Western Air Command and Training Command in which Western Air Command emerged as the winner. The final of the open singles was played between Corporal Pradeep of Training Command and Sergeant Manolin of Western Air Command and Corporal Pradeep emerged as the winner.

About the Air Force Lawn Tennis Championship:

  • The Championship was inaugurated by Air Marshal Vibhas Pande, Air Officer Commanding-in-Chief, HQ MC on 17 October 2022. A total of eight teams comprising of 48 players from the seven Commands of Indian Air Force, participated in the Championship.
  • The Championship was held in two events namely, Team Championship and Open Singles. The matches not only showcased the talents and great potential of the players but generated a lot of enthusiasm amongst the air warriors to pick up Lawn Tennis as a sport.
