22nd Commonwealth Games kicks off at Birmingham, UK

The 22nd edition of the Commonwealth Games kicked off with a glitzy opening ceremony at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham last night. A total of 2,000 performers traced the story of Birmingham’s past and present. A Giant animatronic bull took center stage during the opening ceremony. A total of 72 teams took part in the parade into Birmingham’s Alexander Stadium. PV Sindhu and Manpreet Singh were India’s flag-bearers at the parade of the CWG opening ceremony.

Key points:

A total of 54 nations are participating in this sports extravaganza and 6,500 athletes will compete in 280 medal events. The event will be held till the 8th of August. A 215-member Indian contingent, which includes 111 male players and 104 female players, will compete in 15 sporting events in Birmingham. The Indian contingent consists of 215 athletes competing across 16 disciplines.

Russia to withdraw International Space Station after 2024

Moscow’s space agency Roscosmos’ chief, Yury Borisov has announced that Russia will withdraw from the International Space Station (ISS) after 2024.

Russia and the United States have worked side by side on the space station which has been in orbit since 1998. ISS is the largest modular space station currently in low Earth orbit.

Five participating space agencies: NASA (US), Roscosmos (Russia), JAXA (Japan), ESA (Europe), and CSA (Canada).

Punjabi singer, Balwinder Safri passes away

Punjabi singer, Balwinder Safri has passed away at the age of 63. He was based in Birmingham, UK, was part of the UK bhangra scene since 1980 and formed the Safri Boyz Band in 1990. He was known for his Punjabi tracks such as “Rahaye Rahaye” and “Chan Mere Makhna”.

Some of the famous songs from his band were Boliyan, Ik Dil Karey, Rangle Punjab, and many more. After triple bypass surgeries, the singer went into coma after facing brain damage.

ECGC introduces new scheme to provide enhanced export credit risk insurance

Export Credit Guarantee Corporation of India (ECGC) has launched a new scheme to provide enhanced export credit risk insurance cover to the extent of 90%.

Aim: To support small exporters under the Export Credit Insurance for Banks Whole Turnover Packaging Credit and Post Shipment (ECIB- WTPC & PS).

This scheme will benefit small-scale exporters availing of export credit with banks which hold the ECGC WT-ECIB covers.

RBI launches awareness campaign as unclaimed deposits increase

The RBI has launched a campaign to raise the awareness about the unclaimed deposits, with a focus on the eight states that have the maximum amount of unclaimed deposits. The unclaimed deposits in banks have increased to Rs 48,262 crore in FY22 from Rs 39,264 crore.

Eight states: Tamil Nadu, Punjab, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Bengal, Karnataka, Bihar and Telangana/Andhra Pradesh.

This campaign is launched in Hindi and English along with the languages of these eight states.

BF Infrastructure (Bharat Forge subsidiary) has partnered with Talgo with an aim to manufacture high speed trains in India. Talgo, is a wholly owned subsidiary of Patentes Talgo, it is Spain-based high speed passenger train manufacturer.

Focus: To bring high-speed rail technology and solution to Indian Railways.

Recenlty, the government has floated a tender for 100 Vande Bharat trains with maximum speed of 200kmph.

Cambodia, Uzbekistan, and Cote D'Ivoire receive ICC membership status

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has given the membership status to three countries, Cambodia and Uzbekistan (Asia), and Cote D’Ivoire (Africa), during the ICC Annual Conference in Birmingham. With this addition, the total number of ICC members take to 108 countries which includes 96 Associates. The total count of Asian countries reached to 25 while Cote D’Ivoire is the 21st country from Africa.

United Kingdom PM, Boris Johnson has presented Sir Winston Churchill Leadership Award to Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy for his efforts at the time of crises. He accepted the award by video link during a ceremony held at London office of Johnson.

Falguni Nayar (founder and CEO of Nykaa) has ranked second richest women in India with a net worth of ₹57,520 cr. Falguni Nayar has also emerged as the richest self-made woman. Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw (founder and CEO of Biocon) placed on third with the net worth of ₹29,030 cr.

Olympic medallist, PV Sindhu (badminton player) and Manpreet Singh (Indian men’s hockey team captain) were named as the India’s flag bearer for the opening ceremony of the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games.

The Indian men’s hockey team has bagged bronze medal under the leadership of Manpreet Singh at the Tokyo Olympics (2021). The Sports Authority of India has also launched a new campaign “Create for India” to cheer for Team India.

The objective of the day is to raise awareness among individuals, organisations, and governments about the importance of the conservation of tigers. As per World Wildlife Fund, approximately 95 percent of the population of tigers has declined in the last 150 years. Therefore, this day aims to encourage all to take appropriate action to save the wild cats.

Last year, the theme for the day was – “Their survival is in our hands.” However, this year’s theme for International Tiger Day has not been announced yet.

The day seeks to protect and expand tiger habitats apart from preserving these species. International Tiger Day is observed by many international organisations, including the World Wide Fund for Nature, the International Fund for Animal Welfare, and the Smithsonian Institution. The current wild cat population is 3,900, according to the WWF. India is home to nearly 70% of the world’s tiger population.

International Tiger Day was introduced in 2010 after it was discovered that 97 per cent of tigers had disappeared in the past century, with only about 3,000 remaining. Since tigers were on the verge of extinction, a number of countries signed an agreement at the Saint Petersburg Tiger Summit in Russia to prevent the situation from worsening. Tigers are found in only 13 countries of the world, while 70 per cent of its tigers are in India only.

Tigers are of different colours like White tigers, White tigers with black stripes, Brown tigers with black stripes, and Golden tigers and watching them walk can be a wonderful sight. So far, Bali Tiger, Caspian Tiger, Javan Tiger, and Tiger Hybrids are the species that are extinct.
