Tokyo Olympian discus thrower Kamalpreet Kaur provisionally suspended

Star Indian discus thrower Kamalpreet Kaur, who represented the country at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics last year, has been provisionally suspended by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) after she tested positive for a banned drug. Kamalpreet, who was tested on March 29, was suspended for the presence/use of the prohibited substance stanozolol in her sample, a breach of the World Athletics anti-doping rules. Kaur had made it to the Tokyo Olympics final, finishing sixth with a throw of 63.7m.

A provisional suspension is when an athlete or other person is suspended temporarily from participating in any competition or activity in athletics prior to a final decision at a hearing conducted under the World Athletics Anti-Doping Rules or the Integrity Code of Conduct.

Last year, Kamalpreet became the first Indian to breach the 65m-mark in the discus throw. She has a national record against her name which she created with a throw of 66.59m at the Indian Grand Prix.

24th Deaflympics: Dhanush Srikanth won gold in men’s 10m air rifle

Dhanush Srikanth struck gold in the men’s 10m air rifle competition on Day 3 of the 24th Deaflympics at Caxias do Sul, Brazil, ensuring a golden start to India’s campaign at the Games.

Later, the Indian badminton team also won gold after beating Japan by 3-1 in the final to make it a double celebration for the country. Ukraine is leading the chart with 19 gold, six silver and 13 bronze medals. With two gold and one bronze medal, India has placed eighth on the medals table.

India to be ‘Country of Honour’ at Cannes Marche’ Du Film in France

Union Minister for Information and BroadcastingAnurag Thakur has announced that  India will be the ‘country of honour’ at the Marché Du Film, organised alongside the Cannes Film Festival this year. The development was shared by Union information and broadcasting minister Anurag Thakur on Wednesday.

The Country of Honour Status thereby ensured India’s presence as Focus Country at the Opening Night of Marche Du Films being organized at the Majestic Beach with a spotlight on India, its cinema, its culture & heritage.

India is also a “Country of Honour at the Cannes Next, under which 5 new Start-Ups would be given an opportunity to pitch to the Audio-Visual Industry. Ten professionals will participate in the Animation Day networking.

In another highlight of India’s participation at this edition of the Cannes Film Festival is the World Premiere of the Movie “Rocketry” produced by Shri. R. Madhavan. The movie would be showcased at the Palais des Festivals of the market screening on the 19th of May 2022.

India has been given an opportunity to pitch 5 selected movies at the “Goes to Cannes Section”. 

These movies are part of the Work In Progress lab under the Film Bazaar:

Canara Bank & ASAP ties-up to launch skill loans

Canara Bank in association with the Additional Skill Acquisition Programme (ASAP) has launched ‘skill loans’.

Under this facility, the loan is ranging from ₹5,000 to ₹1.5 lakh. This loan can be availed of by students who are pursuing skill training programmes which are offered by ASAP Kerala or any other Central or State government-recognised agencies. Collateral free loans will be provided to students and have a repayment period of three to seven years. 

RBI raises repo rate by 40 basis points to 4.40%

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has raised the Repo rate by 40 basis points to 4.40% and the cash reserve ratio (CRR) by 50 basis points to 4.50%.

Aim: To bring down the raised inflation to the desired level and tackle the impact of geopolitical tensions.

Deposit rates and EMI on loans are likely to increase. The hike in CRR by 50 bps will suck out Rs 87,000 crore from the banking system. Consumer Price Index inflation stood at 6.95% in March 2022.

Harshada Sharad Garud becomes the 1st Indian to win gold medal at IWF Junior World Weightlifting Championship

In Weightlifting, Harshada Sharad Garud scripted history by becoming the first Indian to win a gold medal at the IWF Junior World Championships at Heraklion in Greece. She won the 45-kilogram weight category with a total of 153 kilograms lifted, including 70 kilograms in Snatch and 83 kilograms in Clean and Jerk.

Key Points:

  • Garud led India to a medal on the first day of the competition, leaving eight rivals behind. Bektas Cansu of Turkey won the silver medal, while Teodora-Luminita Hincu of Moldova won the bronze.
  • The other Indian in the same weight category, Anjali Patel finished fifth with a total effort of 148 kilograms which included 67 kilograms in snatch and 81 kilograms in clean and jerk.
  • Only two Indians have won a medal in the IWF Junior World Championships before
  • Mirabai Chanu was a bronze medalist in 2013 while Achinta Sheuli was a silver medalist the previous year.

About Harshada Sharad Garud:

  • Harshada Sharad Garud, the first Indian weightlifter to win a gold medal at the IWF Junior World Championship 2022, also won the under-17 girls’ title at the 2020 Khelo India Youth Games.
  • Harshada began weightlifting as a 12-year-old at the urging of her father, Sharad Garud, who was a state-level weightlifter himself.

India ranked 21st in Chainalysis 2021 Cryptocurrency Gains by Country

According to the data released by crypto analytics firm Chainalysis, investors around the world realized total Crypto gains of $162.7 billion in 2021, compared to $32.5 billion in 2020. This is 2nd consecutive data by Chainalysis. Ethereum is the most noteworthy gainer among the crypto assets.

It also highlights Ethereum edged out Bitcoin in total realized gains globally at $76.3 billion to $74.7 billion. The United States has topped with an estimated $47 billion in realized cryptocurrency gains.

Followed by the UK, Germany, Japan, and China have been positioned at 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th place respectively. India has ranked 21st with realized gains of around $1.85 billion.

  • However, India ranked lowly at 21st with realized gains of around $1.85 billion while it is topped by the United States with an estimated realized Crypto gain of $49.95 billion.
  • The US is followed by the United Kingdom at 2nd with estimated realized Crypto gains of $8.16 billion, Germany ($5.82 billion), Japan ($5.51 billion), and China ($5.06 billion).

Bangladesh uncover a new gas field of 20 MMCFD capacity

Bangladesh has uncovered a new gas field with the capacity to produce 20 million cubic feet of gas per day (MMCFD) at the Koilastila Gas field.

Koilastila Gas Field is one of the five gas fields which was purchased from the Shell Oil company by Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in 1975. Now, it is possible to supply 17-19 million cubic feet of gas daily to the national grid from the newly discovered well number 6 by May 10. 

Telangana govt extends insurance coverage under ‘Nethanna Bima’ scheme

Telangana Government has announced the extension of insurance coverage to handloom and power loom weavers under ‘Nethanna Bima’ (Weaver’s Insurance) Scheme.

The State Government has extended the insurance coverage of 5 lakh rupees for weavers under the Insurance Scheme on par with Rythu Bima insurance scheme. The insurance coverage would be extended to weavers in the age group of 18 to 59 years.

Ronnie O’Sullivan wins record seventh World Snooker title

Ronnie O’Sullivan (English snooker player) has won his seventh World Snooker Championship crown after beating Judd Trump (English snooker player) by 18-13.

With this win, he has been equalled Stephen Hendry’s modern-day record of seven world titles. O’Sullivan has won his first world title in 2001.

He has also claimed snooker’s biggest prize in 2004, 2008, 2012, 2013 and 2020 before his triumph over the Bristolian.
