NPCI to observe February 2022 as ‘UPI Safety and Awareness Month’

National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and the UPI ecosystem have announced the UPI Safety and Awareness initiative. NPCI and the ecosystem comprising leading banks and fintech will observe February 1 to 7 as UPI Safety and Awareness Week and the whole of February as ‘UPI Safety and Awareness Month, said a statement on Monday.

NPCI has urged users to follow the concept of UPI Safety Shield which mentions 5 tips for safe UPI transactions.

Tata group acquires Odisha-based Neelachal Ispat Nigam Ltd (NINL) for Rs 12,100 crore

Tata Steel Long Products has won the bid to acquire Neelachal Ispat Nigam Ltd (NINL) for around Rs 12,100 crore at a time when the steel sector is going through an upturn. Neelachal Ispat Nigam Ltd (NINL) is a steel plant located in Kalinganagar in Odisha and was shut in March 2020 due to continued losses. It has a capacity of 1.1 million tonnes a year.

NINL is a joint venture of 4 CPSEs — MMTC, NMDC, BHEL, MECON and 2 Odisha Government PSUs — OMC and IPICOL.

PR Sreejesh wins World Games Athlete of the Year award 2021

Indian men’s hockey player PR Sreejesh has won the World Games Athlete of the Year award for 2021. He is the second Indian after Rani Rampal to win this award. She won the award in 2020. In 2020, Indian women’s hockey captain Rani Rampal became the first Indian to win the honour for her performances in 2019.

A total of 24 athletes from 17 countries were nominated for the annual awards based on individual or team performance. Alberto Ginés López of Spain and wushu player Michele Giordano of Italy are the runner-ups. In the FIH Stars Awards in October, Sreejesh was named the goalkeeper of the year for 2021.

Maharashtra has highest number of SC entrepreneurs

Maharashtra tops India’s list in the number of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME) owned by entrepreneurs from the Scheduled Castes with as many as 96,805 enterprises. Tamil Nadu with 42,997 enterprises and Rajasthan with 38,517 units occupy the second and third slots, according to the data furnished by the Office of the Development Commissioner in the Union Ministry of MSME.

The 4TH, 5TH and 6TH  slots belong to Uttar Pradesh (36,913 units), Karnataka (28,803 enterprises) and Punjab (24,503 units) respectively. Generally, the proportion of enterprises owned by Scheduled Caste entrepreneurs in the overall national tally of MSMEs is 6%.

SBI listed the maiden issue of $300 million Formosa bonds on India INX

State Bank of India (SBI) said on Friday that it has issued $300 million Formosa bonds and listed the issuance on India INX GIFT IFSC. This is the first such issuance by any Indian Bank in Formosa Bond market. Formosa bond is a bond issued in Taiwan. SBI was the first issuer whose Green bonds were dually listed in November 2021 on Luxembourg Stock Exchange through an MOU that has been entered into by both Exchanges.

This first successful issuance of Formosa Bond by any Indian commercial bank, is a testimony of the confidence reposed by the overseas investors into India’s growth story and also in SBI.

GAIL commences India’s first-of-its-kind project of mixing hydrogen into the natural gas system at Indore

State gas utility GAIL (India) Ltd said it has commenced India’s first-of-its-kind project of mixing hydrogen into the natural gas system in Indore, Madhya Pradesh. The hydrogen blended natural gas will be supplied to Avantika Gas Ltd, one of GAIL’s joint venture with HPCL, for retailing of CNG to automobiles and piped natural gas to households in Indore. Avantika Gas Ltd is a joint venture of GAIL and HPCL.

India has committed to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2070. Mixing of hydrogen with renewable energy will help in achieving this goal.

Lieutenant General Manoj Pande is under consideration as a replacement for Lieutenant General Mohanty as the next Vice Chief of Army Staff. He will take over from Lieutenant General Chandi Prasad Mohanty who superannuated on January 31, 2022.

Prior to this appointment, Lt Gen Pande was the Eastern Army Commander since June 01, 2021.

Ministry of Defence had launched the Services e-Health Assistance and Teleconsultation (SeHAT) teleconsultation service for all entitled armed forces personnel and their families in May 2021.

To add further to this initiative, the Home Delivery or Self Pickup of Medicines to patients seeking consultation on SeHAT will be started w.e.f February 01, 2022.

Xiomara Castro was sworn in as the first female President of Honduras on 27 January 2022. The former first lady takes over after two terms of President Juan Orlando Hernandez. The 62-year-old Castro replaces President Juan Orlando Hernández, as 56th President of Honduras.

Hernández has held the position for eight years from 27 January 2014 to 27 January 2022.
