Ganesan Sandhirakasan won the top prize in competition for migrant workers
Ganesan Sandhirakasan has won the top prize in a government-initiated competition for migrant workers for choreographing and performing a sequence of Silambam – a traditional martial art form practised in India since the 4th century BC.
The series was made for migrant workers in Singapore and the final episode was aired on Monday night.
The second place in the competition went to Vignesh Sathish, whose video of him performing a traditional dance form known as the Karagattam in costume won him SGD 500 (USD 372).
The winner of the third position – with a prize money of SGD 300 (USD 223) – was Saran Raj, an assistant supervisor with a cleaning company who submitted a video of himself singing.
INS Tabar conducted military exercise with Italian Navy in Tyrrhenian Sea
Indian Naval Ship Tabar participated in military exercises with a frontline frigate of the Italian Navy in Tyrrhenian Sea.
The Tyrrhenian Sea is part of the Mediterranean Sea off the western coast of Italy. It is named for the Tyrrhenian people identified with the Etruscans of Italy.
The sea is bounded by the islands of Corsica and Sardinia to the west; the Italian peninsula to the north and east, and the island of Sicily to the south.
The Tyrrhenian Sea also includes a number of smaller islands like Capri, Elba, Ischia and Ustica.
World Zoonoses Day 2021
World Zoonoses Day is observed on 6th July each year to commemorate the first vaccination administered against a zoonotic disease like Ebola, Avian influenza, and West Nile virus.
Zoonosis is an infectious disease that spread from non-human animals to humans. They started as a zoonosis but later mutate into human-only strains.
Zoonotic pathogens can be bacterial, viral, or parasitic which can spread to humans through direct contact or through food, water, or the environment.
Zoonoses comprise a large percentage of all newly identified infectious diseases like HIV, Ebola virus disease and salmonellosis.
The first vaccination against a zoonotic disease was successfully administered on July 6, 1885, by a French biologist, Louis Pasteur. The day is also celebrated to raise awareness about the risk of zoonotic diseases and their prevention.
Kaushik Basu awarded prestigious Humboldt Research Award
Kaushik Basu has been awarded the Humboldt Research Award for Economics. The award was conferred on him by Professor Dr Hans-Bernd Schäfer of Bucerius Law School in Hamburg, Germany.
A former chief economist of the World Bank, Basu is currently a professor of Economics at Cornell University.
He also served as the Government of India’s chief economic advisor from 2009 to 2012. Basu is also a recipient of the Padma Bhushan, the third-highest civilian award in India.
The prestigious award is sponsored by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and awarded to as many as 100 recipients each year.
IIT Gandhinagar announced to host online camp for school children
IIT Gandhinagar is conducting a free online camp for school students of Classes 8-12 to help them develop critical thinking, empathy, and creativity.
The camp aims to develop critical thinking, empathy and creativity in students, and enable them to be thinkers and influencers.
The camp also seeks to create awareness among school students and parents about Liberal Arts programmes, and about life and career choices that step beyond conventional and mainstream choices.
Since most individuals remain unaware of Humanities and Social Sciences academic programmes offered by technology institutions, the camp will also shed light on such programmes offered by IITs.
Joint Statement on the 1st India-UK Financial Markets Dialogue
India and the UK held the inaugural meeting of the India-UK Financial Markets Dialogue virtually. The Dialogue was established at the 10th Economic and Financial Dialogue (EFD) in October 2020 to deepen bilateral ties in the financial sector.
Financial Cooperation is one of the key pillars of the 2030 Roadmap adopted by the two countries during the recent meeting of the two Prime Ministers and the India-UK Financial Market Dialogue is one of the key elements of this Financial Cooperation.
As two services driven economies, both sides agreed there is significant scope for strengthened financial services cooperation between India and the UK.
The Dialogue began with a government to government discussion, focused on four themes:
- GIFT (Gujarat International Finance Tec-City) City, India’s flagship international financial centre
- Banking and payments
- Insurance
- Capital markets
Manu Sawhney to leave ICC with immediate effect
The International Cricket Council announced that Chief Executive Manu Sawhney will leave the organisation with immediate effect.
The development comes months after Sawhney was suspended after an internal review, which was conducted by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC).
Sawhney became the ICC CEO in January 2019. He succeeded former South African cricketer Dave Richardson, who had held the position for 7 years.
The 56-year-old has been under pressure since the election process for the new chairman was set in motion last year, which ended with Greg Barclay taking the position in November.
It is alleged that Sawhney’s “authoritarian style of functioning” is far removed from the inclusive approach taken by Richardson and has not gone down well with the employees.
New plant species discovered from Antarctica named after India
Indian scientists have discovered a new plant species in Antarctica. The species is named Bryum bharatiensis – after the country’s name and India’s Antarctic station Bharati.
This is the first time a plant species has been discovered in the four decades of the Indian Antarctic mission
Polar biologists of the Central University of Punjab were on Indian Antarctic Mission 2016-17 when Felix Bast, Associate Professor and Head of Department of Botany, stumbled upon a new native species of moss on rocks near Bharati station at Larsemann Hills, East Antarctica.
Bast collected samples of the green plants and brought them back to the university for research. He performed taxonomic assessments along with his PhD student Wahid Ul Rahman and collaborator Kriti Gupta, who is the head of the Botany department, DAV college, Bhatinda.
Philippine volcano billows ‘greyish plume’
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology reported the volcano eruption occurred that has recorded 55 volcanic earthquakes.
The institute said that it recorded “high levels of volcanic sulfur dioxide gas emissions and steam-rich plumes that rose 1,500 metres” from the crater.
Taal Volcano is a large caldera filled by Taal Lake in the Philippines.
Located in the province of Batangas, the volcano is one of the most active volcanoes in the country, with 34 recorded historical eruptions, all of which were concentrated on Volcano Island, near the middle of Taal Lake.

Delhi government approved project to identify real-time sources of pollution
The Delhi government commissioned the “Realtime Source apportionment” project which will help identify the factors responsible for the spike in air pollution at any particular spot in the national capital.
The sources of air pollution will be identified on a real-time basis to initiate mitigation measures under this project, informed Environment Minister Gopal Rai.
Under this, the sources will be tracked in real-time and help to initiate appropriate action on a near real-time basis.
It will help understand the real-time impact of various pollution sources like vehicles, dust, biomass burning, stubble burning, and emissions from industries.
