FICCI Projects India’s GDP growth for 2021-22 projected at 9.1%

The industry body FICCI has revised upward the growth forecast for the Indian economy in 2021-22 to 9.1%, based on the latest FICCI’s Economic Outlook Survey. FICCI’s Economic Outlook Survey also noted that the ongoing festive season would support this momentum.

Earlier in July 2021, this was estimated at 9%.

PM Narendra Modi launches Indian Space Association (ISpA)

Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Indian Space Association (ISpA) on October 11, 2021, via videoconferencing. At the virtual launch event, PM Modi said that the government can no longer act as a handler for the Space sector, but rather has to work as an enabler. He said that the government’s policies will help ensure innovation in the private space sector.

The ISpA is a private industry body that will act as a premier industry body for space and satellite companies in the country. ISpA will be represented by homegrown and global corporations with advanced capabilities in space and satellite technologies.

Tamil Nadu’s ‘Kanniyakumari Clove’ gets GI Tag along with 2 more products

The unique clove spice grown in the hills of Kanyakumari district in Tamil Nadu has been awarded a geographical indication (GI) as ‘Kanyakumari clove’.

The buds, fallen leaves, and stems of the clove trees are also used to make essential oils. The total production of cloves in India is 1,100 metric tons. Of this, 1,000 metric tons are produced in Tamil Nadu every year. Kanyakumari district alone produces 750 metric tons of cloves.

Apart from this, the traditional dye-painted figurative and patterned cloth called Karuppur kalamkari paintings and the wood carvings of Kallakurichi from Tamil Nadu have also received GI tags.

Former SBI Chief Rajnish Kumar launches memoir ‘The Custodian of Trust’

Rajnish Kumar has released his memoir titled ‘The Custodian of Trust – A Banker’s Memoir’. Rajnish Kumar is a former Chairman of the State Bank of India (SBI), will hit the stands on October 18, announced publishing house Penguin Random House India (PRHI) on Thursday.

USA economists David Card, Joshua Angrist and Guido Imbens Wins 2021 Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences

The Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences was been awarded to three United States-based economists — David Card, Joshua Angrist, and Guido Imbens — the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences said in Stockholm.

The second half has been awarded jointly to Joshua D. Angrist and Guido W. Imbens “for their methodological contributions to the analysis of causal relationships.”

The 2021 winners have “provided us with new insights about the labor market and shown what conclusions about cause and effect can be drawn from natural experiments,” the prize committee said in a statement. “Their approach has spread to other fields and revolutionized empirical research.”

The award is officially known as the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel 2021. The laureates in economic sciences are selected by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in Stockholm.

It comes with a gold medal and a cash award of 10 million Swedish krona ($1.12 million).

Astronautical Society of India Confers 2021 Aryabhata Award to Dr. G Satheesh Reddy

Secretary DDR&D and Chairman DRDO Dr. G Satheesh Reddy has been conferred the prestigious Aryabhata Award for 2021 on October 09, 2021, by the Astronautical Society of India (ASI). Dr. Reddy is a pioneer in the area of R&D of advanced avionics, navigation, and missile technologies. Dr. G Satheesh Reddy has been honoured for his outstanding lifetime contribution to the promotion of astronautics in India.

The Aryabhata Award is presented annually to individuals with notable lifetime contributions in the field of astronautics and aerospace technology in India by the Astronautical Society of India (ASI). The award consists of a citation and Rs. 1,00,000 in cash.

The Astronautical Society of India is engaged in the dissemination of technical and other information related to astronautics by conducting technical meetings, bringing out technical publications, and organising exhibitions.

Telugu filmmaker Bejawada Gopal selected for Satyajit Ray Award

Well-known Telugu filmmaker B Gopal, alias Bejawada Gopal, has been chosen for the fourth Satyajit Ray Award for his overall contribution to Indian cinema. Gopal has directed 30 films Telugu films and two Hindi movies. He was selected by a panel comprising Malayalam filmmaker Balu Kiriyath, music director Perumbavoor G Raveendranath and others.

The award is presented by the Satyajit Ray Film Society, Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. Satyajit Ray Award comprises Rs 10,000 cash prize, a memento, and plaque.

World Arthritis Day: 12 October

Every year the World Arthritis Day is observed every year on October 12 to raise awareness about arthritis, an inflammatory condition that causes pain and stiffness in joints which can worsen with age.

This day was started by Arthritis and Rheumatism International (ARI) in 1996 in order to spread awareness about arthritis and encourage policymakers to help reduce the burden of arthritis.

The theme of World Arthritis Day 2021 is “Don’t delay, connect today: Time2work.”

Malayalam writer Benyamin bags Vayalar Award

Well-known Malayalam writer Benyamin has bagged the 45th Vayalar Ramavarma Memorial Literary Award for his book “Manthalirile 20 Communist Varshangal”. The prestigious award, instituted by the Vayalar Ramavarma Memorial Trust, comprises a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh, a sculpture designed by renowned sculptor Kanayi Kunhiraman and a citation.

A political satire, the novel revolves around a nondescript village called Manthalir and the influence of religion and politics in its culture in two decades. It was chosen for recognition by an expert panel comprising writers K R Meera, George Onakkoor, and C Unnikrishnan.

The award would be presented to the writer in a function to be held here on October 27, the organizers added.

Shri Jyotiraditya M. Scindia flags off the Doon Drone Mela in Uttarakhand

Union Minister of Civil Aviation, Shri Jyotiraditya Scindia along with the Minister of State in the Ministry of Civil Aviation, General (Retd.) Dr. V.K. Singh flagged off the Doon Drone Mela 2021 in Dehradun, Uttarakhand. Shri Scindia flagged off the event with a paragliding demonstration and also interacted with the drone companies exhibiting their prototypes at the Doon Drone Mela.

The day marked the demonstration of the Drone & Aerosports Demonstrations that included a paragliding demonstration by the Border Security Force, a Paramotor demonstration by Harsh Sachan, and an agriculture spraying drone demonstration by IoTechWorld Aviation & Dhaksha.

Furthermore, the event also included an emergency search & response drone demonstration with an indigenously 3D-printed drone by the Drone Application and Research Centre (DARC) & State Disaster Response Force (SDRF). It was followed by a brief survey drone demonstration by the Aarav Unmanned Systems (AUS) under the SVAMITVA Scheme along with a training drone demonstration by Sqn Ldr Varsha Kukreti (Retd).

2021 Global Multidimensional Poverty Index Report

The global MPI is jointly produced by UNDP and the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative (OPHI). The index complements monetary-based measures of poverty, expressing deprivations that are manifested in people’s daily lives in ways that go beyond the ability to purchase goods and services.

The report provides estimates on multidimensional poverty for 109 developing countries (with data from surveys ranging 2009-2019/2020); these include 26 low-income countries, 80 middle-income countries, and 3 high-income countries. The index measures each person’s deprivations across 10 indicators divided into three equally weighted dimensions.

National Award-winning actor Nedumudi Venu passes away

National Award-winning Malayalam actor Kesavan Venugopal, known by his stage name Nedumudi Venu, has sadly passed away. He was 73. The actor was admitted to the ICU of a private hospital in Thiruvananthapuram. He was suffering from liver-related ailments.

Nedumudi Venu began his career as a theatre artist. He debuted in films with Thambu, directed by G Aravindan in 1978.

He also worked in Malayalam and Tamil movies in over 500 movies including Aravam, Vidaparayum Munpe, Kallan Pavithran, Chamaram, Bharatham, Oru Minnaminunginte Nurunguvettam, Chithram, Thenmavin Kombath, His Highness Abdullah, Margam, and Arimpara.

Nedumudi Venu received three National Film Awards and six Kerala State Film Awards for his performances.
