Ladakh became the first Union Territory to achieve 100% first dose cover
Ladakh became the first Union Territory to vaccinate all residents and the ‘guest population’, consisting of migrant labourers, hotel workers and Nepalese citizens who are earning their livelihood here, with the first dose of Covid-19 vaccine.
According to official data, a total of 89,404 people from all eligible age groups, including 18-44 years, have been administered the first dose of Covid vaccine.
The second dose has been administered to 60,936 people. This was done in less than three months of starting the third phase of vaccination, covering the 18-44 age group. A total of 6,821 Nepalese citizens living in the UT were among those vaccinated.
Ladakh is a region administered by India as a union territory, and constitutes a part of the larger Kashmir region.
Assam to create a department for indigenous faith and culture
The Assam government announced to creation of an independent department to protect and preserve the “faith, culture and traditions of tribes and indigenous communities” of the state.
In Assam, the caste system, although it exists, is not as prominent as in other parts of India. Other religions such as Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam etc. are also practiced in Assam.
The greater Kachari group forms a major part of Assam encompassing 19 major tribes, both plain and hills, viz., Boro, Mising, Dimasa, Chutia, Sonowal, Tiwa, Garo, Rabha, Sarania Kachari, Hajong, Tripuri, Deori, Thengal Kachari, Hojai, Koch, and others.
Vijayawada station became the first Solar Railway Station in the country to be covered with 130 kWp solar panels
Indian Railways’ Vijayawada station in the state of Andhra Pradesh became the first railway station in the country to be covered with 130 kWp solar panels.
The national transporter plans to be a Net Zero Carbon Emitter by the year 2030.
Earlier, Indian Railways had said that for meeting its traction power requirement, it plans to set up solar plants on unused vacant railway land.
Indian Railways plans to install 20 GW land based solar plants.
In order to further proliferate these pilot projects, the national transporter has initially planned to set up 3 GWp of land based solar plants in three phases.
Ayurveda Physician Dr. P.K. Warrior passed away
Dr Panayambally Krishnakutty Warrier, doyen of ayurveda medicine and managing trustee of Vaidyaratnam P S Varier’s Arya Vaidya Sala passed away.
Joining as a factory manager in 1947 at the centre, which had been founded by his nephew P S Varier in 1902, Warrier became the chief physician and the managing trustee in 1953 following the death of his elder brother P M Varier in an air crash.
One year later, he opened a nursing home and started Panchakarma and other Kerala special therapies. That care centre, the first of such facilities in the traditional healing system, later grew into a leading research centre.
In 1970, then Indian President V V Giri flew to Kottakkal village to get ayurvedic treatment under Warrier, bringing national attention to the traditional method.
Covishield has been recognized by 15 EU countries for travellers
World Health Organization (WHO) claims that 15 EU countries so far recognise the AstraZeneca vaccine manufactured by the Serum Institute India as a valid proof of immunity for travel.
Currently, the vaccines authorised by EMA are Comirnaty (Pfizer), Spikevax (Moderna), Vaxzevria (AstraZeneca), and Janssen (Johnson & Johnson). Whereas the following are under review: German CureVac, Russian Sputnik V, American Novavax, and the Chinese Sinovac.
Whereas the vaccines approved by the WHO are Comirnaty (Pfizer), Vaxzevria (AstraZeneca), Covishield (AstraZeneca produced in India), Janssen (Johnson & Johnson), Spikevax (Moderna), as well as the Chinese Sinopharm and Sinovac-CoronaVac.
Rajasthan recently announced medical colleges set up in all the districts
Rajasthan state government recently announced to set up medical colleges in all the districts.
Rajasthan has fulfilled the necessary conditions with full preparation due to which our steps can be taken towards the establishment of medical colleges in the government sector in 30 districts.
Health Minister Raghu Sharma said taking lessons from the harsh experiences of the second wave, the state government is working fast on the plan to increase oxygen production and paediatric units.
Ashleigh Barty won the Wimbledon tennis women’s singles title
Ashleigh Barty won her first Wimbledon singles title, beating Karolina Pliskova, 6-3, 6-7(4), 6-3.
She is the first Australian woman to win the singles trophy at the All England Club since Evonne Goolagong in 1980.
Barty says she has been inspired by Goolagong and wore an outfit at Wimbledon that was a tribute to the dress Goolagong played in when she won the tournament for the first time in 1971.
Vinay Prakash has been appointed as Grievance Officer by Twitter
Twitter has appointed Vinay Prakash as its resident grievance officer for India days after announcing an interim chief compliance officer.
The company had disclosed a postal address in Bengaluru, as required under the new rules. Jeremy Kessel, the company’s senior director of global legal policy, who is based in San Francisco is also listed as the grievance officer for India.
The microblogging platform also told the court that it had appointed an interim chief compliance officer on July 6.
Thirty-eight complaints were registered through the grievance officer channel in India. Of these, 20 were related to defamation, followed by six that were related to abuse or harassment.
Other complaints included impersonation, sensitive adult content and privacy infringement. Twitter took action against 133 URLs with a majority related to harassment and defamation.
India’s first Cryptogamic Garden has been inaugurated in Uttarakhand
Uttarakhand Forest department has dedicated a Cryptogamic garden of ancient plants/organisms, existing since the Jurassic era, that grow without seeds and flowers, to the public .
It was built in the Deoban area of Dehradun district at a height of 2,700 metres. Cryptogam are plants or plant-like organisms that reproduce by spores, without producing flowers or seeds.
Uttarakhand forest department’s research wing developed the Cryptogamic garden over three acres of land with 75 species of such plants and plant-like organisms (in case of fungi) belonging to six different groups.
The forest officials said the aim of developing the garden was to create awareness and display the diversity of ancient Himalayan flora in the state.
The garden was dedicated to the public by Anoop Nautiyal, founder of Dehradun-based think tank Social Development for Communities.
Italy football team has won the European Championship 2020
Italy lifted their second European Championship trophy after they defeated England 3-2 in penalty shoot-out in the Euro 2020 final at Wembley Stadium in London.
This is the first major international trophy that Italy have won since their 2006 FIFA World Cup win.
The Azzurri had last won the continental title back in 1968. Italy had reached the final in Euro 2000 and Euro 2012, as well, but had lost to France, and Spain, respectively.
England were eyeing their first European Championship trophy and their first major international football title since winning the FIFA World Cup at home in 1966.
Cristiano Ronaldo won Euro 2020 Golden Boot
Cristiano Ronaldo claimed his first European Championship Golden Boot as EURO 2020 with Italy emerging as the champion.
Ronaldo had scored in every single group stage game for Portugal, bagging a brace against both Hungary and France.
Ronaldo also became the leading goal-scorer in the history of Euros during the tournament, with his 14th strike.
Meanwhile, with 109 goals, he had equalled Iran striker Ali Daei as the top scorer in international football as well.

‘Kazi Nemu,’ the Assamese lemon, which is one of the main food items of every Assamese people, has made its way into the markets of London.
This Assamese lemon is exclusively grown and found in Assam.
Prior, between December 2020 and January 2021, a massive consignment of ‘Kazi Nemu’ weighing almost 6 MT was exported to the European business sectors.
It is to be noted that ‘Kazi Nemu’ is utilized for preparing refreshing drinks and pickles as well as garnishing curry and other dishes.
As Kazi Nemu is prominently consumed with Assamese cuisine, this great news of Assam export in Al-Hamra Supermarket, London supermarkets, and European markets, made all Assamese proud.
Massive solar storm set to hit Earth
A high-speed solar storm is expected to hit our planet’s magnetic field, affecting electricity supply and communication infrastructure around the world.
The solar flare, flowing from an equatorial hole in the sun’s atmosphere that was first detected on July 3, can travel at a maximum speed of 500 km/second, according to spaceweather.com.
Although full-fledged geomagnetic (magnetic field associated with Earth) storms are unlikely, lesser geomagnetic unrest could spark high-latitude auroras.
The satellites in the Earth’s upper atmosphere are also expected to get impacted by the incoming flares.
This will directly impact GPS navigation, mobile phone signal and satellite TV. Power grids can also be hit by the solar flares.
National Simplicity Day 2021
National Simplicity Day is celebrated on July 12 each year to honour Henry David Thoreau who advocates the life of simplicity.
Henry David Thoreau was an American author, an environmentalist, philosopher, naturalist, poet, historian, surveyor, and transcendentalist.
The day gives us a chance to shun gadgets and experience true peace and enjoy the simplicity of life.
National Simplicity Day was born out of a need to be free from the complications of the world and to allow ourselves to just be simple.

Paper Bag Day 2021
Paper Bag Day is observed on 12 July each year to spread awareness about using paper bags instead of plastics.
The adverse impacts of plastic bags on the environment have led to the use of paper bags. Plastic takes years to decompose, whereas paper bags can be reduced and easily recyclable.
Environmental pollution can be curbed using paper bags. People are opting for a sustainable lifestyle and paper bags are biodegradable.
In 1852, an American inventor named Francis Wolle established the first paper bag machine. Later in 1871, Margaret E Knight developed another machine that produced flat-bottom paper bags. She became popular as “the mother of the grocery bag”.
E-commerce firm Flipkart recently eliminated all single-use plastic packaging used across its fulfillment centres in the country and started to use Paper bags.
