India will host the 2026 World Badminton Championships

The Badminton World Federation has allotted the BWF World Championships to India for 2026. India had hosted the BWF World Championships in Hyderabad in 2009.

Since 2009, India has played host to various major badminton tournaments including the 2014 Thomas and Uber Cup Finals, the Asian Championships apart from the annual BWF Super 500 event, the Yonex-Sunrise India Open.

Badminton Association of India (BAI) president Himanta Biswa Sarma is confident that hosting the World Championships in 2026 would help Indian badminton take bigger steps towards becoming a world powerhouse.

India has so far won 10 World Championships medals with reigning champion PV Sindhu leading the chart with a gold, two silver, and two bronze medals, while Prakash Padukone won India’s first medal at the World Championships in 1983.

Deepak Kabra to become first Indian gymnastics judge to officiate at Games

33-year-old Deepak Kabra became the first Indian to be selected for judging the gymnastics competition of the Olympic Games.

Kabra will be seen officiating the men’s artistic gymnasts at the Tokyo Games, which gets underway on July 23.

The 2010 Commonwealth Games in India was his first international assignment and Kabra went on to become the first Indian judge to officiate in the 2014 Asian Games and Youth Olympics.

He also officiated as a judge in the Asian Games and Commonwealth Games in 2018, Youth Olympics in Argentina, besides other international events such as World Cups.

Khelo India Youth Games 2022 will be held in Haryana

Khelo India Youth Games 2022 will be held in Haryana which has scheduled to take place in November in Ambala, Chandigarh, Delhi, Panchkula and Shahbad.

The last edition of the Khelo India Youth Games was held in Guwahati, Assam in January 2020.

Haryana won the inaugural edition of the Khelo India Youth Games in 2018 and finished runner-up behind Maharashtra last year.

Khelo India Youth Games are the national level multidisciplinary grassroot games in India held for two categories, namely under-17 years school students and under-21 college students.

Sher Bahadur Deuba is appointed as the new Prime Minister of Nepal

Leader of the Nepali Congress, Sher Bahadur Deuba is appointed as the new Prime Minister of Nepal.

The 75-year old centrist politician was sworn to office by President Bidhya Devi Bhandari.

Deuba previously served four terms as the Prime Minister of Nepal from 1995 to 1997, 2001 to 2002, 2004 to 2005, and 2017 to 2018.

He became Prime Minister again on 13 July 2021, as per the order of the Supreme Court of Nepal citing article 76(5) of the Constitution of Nepal.

He has been a Member of Parliament for Dadeldhura–1 since 1991. He is also the current president of the Nepali Congress, having been elected to the position in 2016.

Uttar Pradesh decided to give Rs 10 lakhs to each of the Tokyo Olympic participant

The Uttar Pradesh state government has announced hefty cash awards for medal-winning athletes at the forthcoming Tokyo Olympics.

Athletes who win the gold medal at the Tokyo Olympic Games will be awarded Rs 6 crore each by the state government, while silver and bronze medallists will get an amount of Rs 4 crore and Rs 2 crore, respectively.

All athletes participating in the Tokyo Olympics will be given Rs 10 lakh each by the state government.

According to a government spokesman, for the athletes in team sports, the Yogi government has decided to give Rs 3 crore to the winners of a gold medal and Rs 2 crore and 1 crore to the players winning silver and bronze medals, respectively.

APEDA signed MoU with NAFED for boosting export potential of Agriculture

APEDA and NAFED have recently signed a MoU to facilitate registered exporters get assistance under various government schemes and help cooperatives sell their products globally and build capacities.

The MoU also entails providing assistance towards capacity building of cooperative societies and self-help groups for their social & environmental compliances and skilling as per international standards.

Both the organisations would organise awareness programs, skill development programmes and workshops at regional, State and national levels.

The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), under the Commerce & Industry Ministry, would facilitate exports by cooperatives, farmer produce organisations, partners and associates identified and promoted by National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Ltd (NAFED).

ISRO is planning to launch Geo Imaging satellite, GISAT-1

The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) is going to launch the geo-imaging satellite GISAT-1 on board GSLV-F10 rocket on August 12.

GISAT-1 will facilitate near real-time observation of the Indian sub-continent, under cloud-free conditions, at frequent intervals.

GISAT-1 will be placed in a Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit by GSLV-F10 and it will be positioned in the final geostationary orbit, about 36,000 km above the Earth’s equator.

The earth observation satellite will provide the country near real-time images of its borders and also enable quick monitoring of natural disasters.

Research-based center of excellence at NFSU in Gujarat

Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated the R&D Centre of Excellence for Research and Analysis of NDPS (narcotics and psychotropic substances) at the National Forensic Science University (NFSU).

Illegal drugs seized across India would now be sent here for accurate analysis of its contents and also to find the country of origin of such banned substances.

However, with the new research and analysis facility, agencies working in the field will now be able to get specific information on where the drug originated.

NFSU was established by the Government of India through Act, 2020 (32 of 2020) with the objective of fulfilling the acute shortage against the increasing demand for forensic experts in the country and around the world.

Total 126 Indian athletes are going to Tokyo for the Tokyo Olympics

Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently interacted with the Indian athletes’ contingent bound for Tokyo Olympics which are from 22 States.

A total of 126 athletes across 18 sports disciplines from India will be heading to Tokyo. This is the biggest-ever contingent India is sending to any Olympics.

The 69 cumulative events across the 18 sport disciplines that India will participate in is also the highest ever for the country.

There are several notable firsts in terms of participation. For the first time in its history, a Fencer from India (Bhavani Devi) has qualified for the Olympic Games.

Nethra Kumanan is the first ever female Sailor from India to qualify for an Olympic Games.

Sajan Prakash and Srihari Nataraj are the first Swimmers from India to qualify for an Olympic Games by achieving the ‘A’ Qualification Standard in Swimming.

Kerala plans to launch the Mathru Kavacham campaign to vaccinate pregnant women

The Kerala state government announced to launch a campaign called ‘Mathru Kavacham’ to provide COVID-19 vaccines to all the pregnant women in the state.

As part of the campaign, all pregnant women will be registered for vaccination at the ward level by ASHA workers.

Those who can register on their own will be encouraged to do so. Those without facilities like smartphones and computers will be registered with the help of ASHA workers.

The health workers will ensure that all pregnant women in each sub-centre area are registered and vaccinated.

Cricketer Yashpal Sharma passed away

Former Indian cricketer and 1983 World Cup winner Yashpal Sharma passed away recently at the age of 66.

Yashpal was one of the heroes in India s World Cup triumph in 1983. He played a pivotal role in the cup by scoring 240 runs at an average of 34.28 including a match-winning 60 against England in the semi-finals.

The former Punjab cricketer was regarded as a gifted middle-order batsman.In a career spanning from 1979 to 1983, Yashpal played 37 Tests for India and scored 1606 runs with two centuries and nine fifties.

He was an umpire too and stood in a couple of women’s ODIs. The multi-faceted former player also served as coach of the Uttar Pradesh Ranji team.

Rao Inderjit Singh took charge as MoS in the Ministry of Corporate Affairs

Shri Rao Inderjit Singh recently took charge as Union Minister of State in the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA).

Shri Singh is a Member of Parliament (MP) from Gurgaon constituency in Haryana in the 17th Lok Sabha. He is currently serving his 5th term as an MP.

Active in public service for over 4 decades, Shri Singh was earlier a Member of Legislative Council (MLA) from Jatusana Vidhan Sabha in Haryana and served as Minister in state Government of Haryana.                     

Shri Singh has done graduation and LL.B from Delhi University. Shri Singh, an advocate and agriculturist by profession, is 71 years old and is also an active political and social worker.    

Kapil Moreshwar Patil took charge as MoS in the Ministry of Panchayati Raj

Shri Kapil Moreshwar Patil recently took the charge as Minister of State in the Ministry of Panchayati Raj.

Patil contested 2014 Lok Sabha elections from Bhiwandi (Lok Sabha constituency) as BJP /NDA candidate.

He was sworn-in as a union minister in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ministry reshuffle on July 7, 2021.

NTPC to set up India’s single largest solar park at Rann of Kutch

National Thermal Power Corporation, NTPC will set up India’s single largest solar park at Rann of Kutch in Khavada, Gujarat.

With this 4750 Mega Watt renewable energy park, NTPC Limited aims to build 60 Giga Watt renewable energy capacity by 2032.

NTPC Renewable Energy Ltd (NTPC REL), has been given the go-ahead by MNRE on 12th July 2021 under Mode 8 (Ultra Mega Renewable Energy Power Park) of Solar Park Scheme.

NTPC REL has plans to generate green hydrogen on a commercial scale from this park.

Currently, the state owned power major has an installed capacity of 66 GW across 70 power projects with an additional 18 GW under construction.

G. Kishan Reddy chaired the BRICS Tourism Ministers’ meeting

G. Kishan Reddy, Minister for Tourism of India, chaired the BRICS Tourism Ministers’ meeting on 13 July, 2021, as part of India’s BRICS chairship.

The Ministers of all the member countries viz. Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa participated in the meeting.

India organized the BRICS Tourism Ministers’ Meeting as an effective means to promote tourism cooperation among BRICS countries.

The meeting reviewed the intra BRICS Tourism cooperation. The significant aspect of the meeting was the adoption of the Ministers’ Communique, an outcome document on cooperation and promotion of tourism between the BRICS countries.
