World Bank Report States Extreme Poverty in India Decline by 12.3% between 2011-2019

Extreme poverty has gone down by 12.3 percentage points between 2011-2019, a rate significantly lower than that of the 2004-2011 period. Poverty headcount rate dropped from 22.5 per cent in 2011 to 10.2 per cent in 2019 with more pronounced deductions in rural areas compared to urban areas, according to a recent World Bank working paper.

The decline in rural areas was much higher than in urban areas. While the reduction in rural poverty dropped by 14.7 percentage points, the poverty in urban areas dropped by 7.9 percentage points.

The paper titled ‘Poverty has Declined over the last decade But Not As Much As Previously Thought’ was jointly authored by economists Sutirtha Sinha Roy and Roy van der Weide.

New Zealand pacer Hamish Bennett has announced his retirement from all forms of cricket ending his 17-year old career.

The 35-year-old Bennett has made 31 appearances for New Zealand across all three formats and took 43 wickets and most recently he featured in the T20Is versus Bangladesh last September.  He was also selected in the Blackcaps’ squad for the 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup in India, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka.

India Elected to Four UN ECOSOC Bodies

India has been elected to four key United Nations Economic and Social Council (UN-ECOSOC) Bodies in April 2022. To the Committee for Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, Ambassador Preeti Saran has been re-elected. In 2018, she was first elected to the Asia Pacific seat on the UN’s Committee on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights. On 1st January 2019, her first four-year term began.

These bodies include:

  1. Commission for Social Development,
  2. Committee on NGOs,
  3. Commission on Science & Technology for Development
  4. Ambassador Preeti Saran has been re-elected to Committee for Economic, Social and Cultural Rights.

Apart from this, India has contributed US$ 200,000 to UN Investigative Team to Promote Accountability for Crimes by Da’esh/ ISIL (UNITAD). The contribution will be used to support the two areas of UNITAD’s investigations, which are: Development and use of chemical and biological weapons by ISIL and ISIL crimes against cultural heritage in Iraq.

BRO to construct world’s highest tunnel at Shinku La Pass connecting Himachal Pradesh to Ladakh

The Border Roads Organisation will construct the world’s highest tunnel at Shinku La Pass at 16,580 feet to connect Himachal Pradesh to Ladakh, BRO Director General Lieutenant General Rajeev Chaudhary said here on Saturday.

BRO will execute this ambitious project under ‘Project Yojak’. This tunnel is proposed to be completed by 2025.

Lieutenant General Manoj Pande was appointed the new Chief of Army Staff. He will succeed General M M Naravane on May 1. Lt Gen Pande is the incumbent Vice-Chief of the Army. He will take over from General MM Naravane, who is set to retire on April 30, 2022.

Lt Gen Manoj Pande is the first-ever officer from the Corps of Engineer to be appointed as Army Chief.

Yemeni President Abdrabbuh Mansur Hadi stepped down under pressure from Saudi Arabia and is now under de-facto house arrest, The Wall Street Journal reports.

Hadi has also handed over his power to the newly created presidential council, which consists of eight political leaders led by Rashad al-Alimi. He had served as the president of Yemen from 2012 until 2022.

Amends FEMA rules to allow 20% FDI in LIC

The government has amended the rules of the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) to open the way for up to 20% Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in the Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC).

The government is also planning to dilute its stake in LIC through the Initial Public Offering (IPO).

SEBI has also given approval to the draft papers and the insurer is in the process of filing a request for a proposal with changes.

K N Vyas gets one-year extension as Atomic Energy Commission Chairman

The Appointment Committee of the Cabinet has granted one year extension to Atomic Energy Commission Chairman Kamlesh Nilkanth Vyas.

The extension in service to Vyas for a period of one year beyond May 3, 2022 or “until further orders”.

This is the second extension for Vyas, he was first appointed to the post in September 2018.

Twitter’s board of directors has recently adopted a limited-term shareholder rights plan to prevent anyone from having more than 15% stake in company, the plan is also called a ‘poison pill’.

This will make it harder for Elon Musk to acquire the social media company.

Currently, Elon Musk has around 9% of Twitter’s shares and he has offered to acquire all the shares in Twitter he does not own for 54.20 dollar per share, valuing the company at 41.4 billion dollar.
