AIIB approves USD 150 million loans for implementation of Sustainable Urban services program for Chennai Metropolitan Area

The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) has approved 150 million USD loan to the Government of India for the implementation of the Sustainable Urban services program for the Chennai Metropolitan Area (CMA). 

AIIB Vice President (Investment Operations), Dr. D.J. Pandian while speaking to Prasar Bharati Special Correspondent exclusively said that India is the largest beneficiary of AIIB and the bank has so far approved 29 projects for India worth 6.8 billion USD. The CMA project will cover the core urban services, including water resource management, water supply and sewerage, urban mobility, solid waste management, and public health.

India re-elected to UNESCO Executive Board for 2021-25 term with 164 votes

 India on November 17, 2021 won the re-election to the executive board of the United Nations cultural and education organization for the 2021-25 term. India received 164 votes to get re-elected to four-year term of office.

Apart from India, Japan, Philippines, Vietnam, Cook Islands, and China have also been elected in Group IV Asian and Pacific States category. It consists of 58 member-states each with a four-year term of office, according to the UNESCO website.

Spain’s Garbine Muguruza wins 2021 WTA Finals

Spain’s Garbiñe Muguruza has won her first WTA Finals Championship and in the final, Muguruza defeated No.8 seed Anett Kontaveit of Estonia, 6-3, 7-5. Muguruza is also the first Spaniard to win the WTA Finals.

In doubles, Czech’s Barbora Krejčíková and Kateřina Siniaková defeated Hsieh Su-wei (Chinese Taipei) and Elise Mertens (Belgium) 6–3, 6–4.

The 2021 WTA Finals were initially supposed to take place in Shenzhen, China but were moved due to travel restrictions related to coronavirus. As a result, the WTA Finals was moved to Mexico for the first time.

Veteran sports commentator and football pundit Novy Kapadia passes away at 68

Noted sports commentator and author Novy Kapadia passed away in New Delhi after a prolonged illness. He was 68. The sports journalist was a well-known name among footballing circles in the country and was often referred to as ‘the Football encyclopedia’.

Kapadia was often called ‘the voice of Indian football’. The noted commentator had covered nine FIFA World Cups, as well as Olympics, Asian Games, and Commonwealth Games. As an author, Kapadia had written books like Barefoot to Boots, The Many Lives Of Indian Football among others.

Sourav Ganguly appointed as the chairman of ICC's Cricket Committee

Sourav Ganguly has been appointed as the Chairman of the ICC men’s Cricket Committee, the global cricket governing body.

He will replace Anil Kumble, who stepped down after serving a maximum of a three-year term. Sourav Ganguly was appointed as the president Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in October 2019. Johnny Grave, CEO of Cricket West Indies has been appointed to the ICC Women’s Cricket Committee.

Union Minister Piyush Goyal inaugurates India’s first food museum in Tamil Nadu’s Thanjavur

Union Minister for Commerce, Industry, Food, and Public Distribution Piyush Goyal has launched India’s first Food Museum at Thanjavur in Tamil Nadu on 15th November 2021 through the virtual platform.

The Food Security Museum showcases India’s Agri revolution story from being dependent to becoming self-sufficient and one of the largest food grain exporter’s nations. The museum was established by the Food Corporation of India (FCI).

FCI and Visvesvaraya Industrial and Technological Museums, Bangalore, have co-developed the museum at an estimated cost of Rs 1.1 crore over a 1,860-sqft area.

President Ram Nath Kovind inaugurates Adarsh Village ‘Sui’ in Haryana’s Bhiwani

President Shri Ram Nath Kovind visited Sui village in the Bhiwani district of Haryana on November 17, 2021 to inaugurate various public facilities in the village.

This village is being developed as Adarsh Gram (Model village) by Mahadevi Parameshwaridas Jindal Charitable Trust under Swa-Prerit Adarsh Gram Yojana (SPAGY) scheme of the Haryana Government. The village has been equipped with a library, reverse osmosis (RO) water facility, 8 parks, a new school building, 250 streetlights, an auditorium, and a lake.

The Jindal trust has undertaken developmental works of over Rs 25 crore to transform Sui into an ADARSH VILLAGE. Bhiwani has become the 1st district in India where two Presidents have visited. prior to this, APJ Abdul Kalam had visited Bhiwani in 2007.

Uttar Pradesh’s first Anti-Air Pollution Tower inaugurated in Noida

The Union Minister of Heavy Industries Mahendra Nath Pandey inaugurated the Air Pollution Control Tower (APCT) prototype developed by state-run Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (Bhel) in Noida on November 17 2021. The indigenously developed APCT is set up between the DND flyway and the slip road to Noida Expressway. The tower will help to mitigate the rising air pollution problem in the city.

Sydney Dialogue

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will deliver the keynote address at The Sydney Dialogue on November 18, 2021 on the theme of India’s technology evolution and revolution.

The Sydney Dialogue has been organized from November 17-19, 2021 by the Australian Strategic Policy Institute. The event will bring together political, business, and government leaders to debate, generate new ideas, and work towards common understandings of the opportunities and challenges posed by emerging and critical technologies. The event will also witness a keynote address by Australian Prime Minister Morrison and former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

Indian Railways gets first pod hotel at Mumbai Central station

Indian Railways’ first pod hotel was inaugurated at Mumbai Central railway station by the minister of state for railways, Raosaheb Danve. The pod hotel has several small bed-sized capsules and provides affordable overnight accommodation.

Charges: Rs 999 for 12 hours and Rs 1,999 for 24 hours.

Facilities: WiFi, TV, a small locker, adjustable mirror, and reading lights. 

These resting facilities can be availed by Passengers of Indian Railways and even common people.

SIDBI, Google tie-up for loan programme targeted at micro-enterprises

SIDBI has entered into a collaboration with Google for having a social impact lending programme. The program entails financial assistance up to ₹1 crore at competitive interest rates targeted at micro-enterprises.

The collaboration brings a corpus of $15 million to micro-enterprises. This envisages a loan program targeted at micro-enterprises (having turnover up to ₹5 crores), with loan sizes ranging between ₹25 lakh to ₹1 crore, being implemented by SIDBI.

BDL signs $21-million contract with Airbus Defense & Space

Bharat Dynamics Limited (BDL) has signed a $21-million export contract for Counter-Measures Dispensing System (CMDS) with Airbus Defense & Space.

Under the Contract, BDL will supply its Counter Measures Dispensing System to the Spanish entity.

BDL is offering Akash Weapon System (surface-to-air missile), Astra Weapon System (air-to-air missile), Smart Anti-Airfield Weapon & Helina (air-to-surface weapon), Light Weight Torpedo and Heavy Weight Torpedo (underwater weapons), Counter-Measures Dispensing System among others.

Akasa Air inks pact with CFM for LEAP-1B engines

Rakesh Jhunjhunwala backed-Akasa Air announced the purchase of CFM LEAP-1B engines to power its recently purchased Boeing 737 MAX airplanes. The agreement, which also includes spare engines and long-term services agreement, is valued at nearly $4.5 billion at list price.

Akasa had ordered 72 Boeing 737 MAX airplanes valued at nearly $9 billion at list price. The LEAP-1B engine entered into service on the Boeing 737 MAX in 2017.

National Newborn Week 2021: 15-21 November

In India, Newborn Care Week is observed every year from 15 to 21 November. The main objective of celebrating the week is to raise awareness about the importance of newborn care for child survival and development.

Purpose: to reinforce the importance of newborn health as a key priority area of the health sector and reduce the infant mortality rate by improving healthcare conditions for babies in the neonatal period.

Theme 2021:

The theme of National Newborn Week 2021 is ‘Safety, quality and nurturing care – the birthright of every newborn’.

World Antimicrobial Awareness Week: 18-24 November

The World Health Organization annually hosts the World Antibiotic Awareness Week (WAAW), also known as World Antimicrobial Awareness Week. WAAW is celebrated every year from 18-24 November.

Purpose: increase awareness of global antimicrobial resistance, encourage best practices among the general public, health workers and policymakers to avoid the further emergence and spread of drug-resistant infections.

Theme 2021: The theme of WAAW is ‘Spread Awareness, Stop Resistance.’ While World Antimicrobial Awareness Week’s primary tagline is ‘Antimicrobials: Handle with Care.’ The theme calls on One Health stakeholders, policymakers, health care providers, and the general public to be Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Awareness champions.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has been declared as one of the top 10 global health threats by the World Health Organization (WHO).

World Toilet Day: 19 November

World Toilet Day is celebrated annually on 19 November to inspire action to tackle the global sanitation crisis and help achieve Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6), which promises sanitation for all by 2030.

The day was established by the World Toilet Organization in 2001 and officially declared by UN General Assembly in 2013. The Day was designated by the UN General Assembly on 24 July 2013 by resolution A/RES/67/291.

The theme for World Toilet Day 2021 is “Valuing Toilets”.
