Tourism Minister addresses ‘Tourism in Buddhist Circuits – A way forward'

Union Minister for Culture & Tourism G Kishan Reddy addressed the inaugural session of Tourism in Buddhist Circuits – A way forward’ at Hotel Royal Residency in Kushinagar.

It is a two-day conference which will highlight Buddhist Circuit and Buddhist tourism

Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi inaugurated the Kushinagar International Airport today. On the occasion of the inauguration of Kushinagar International Airport, Uttar Pradesh, the Ministry of Tourism has organized a two days’ conference titled “Tourism in Buddhist Circuit – A way forward” on 20th & 21st October 2021 at Kushinagar. 

India, Israel, UAE, U.S. decide to launch a quadrilateral economic forum

The decision to launch a new quadrilateral economic forum was made by India, Israel, the United Arab Emirates, and the United States as External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar joined a meeting via videoconference from Jerusalem. The EAM is on a five-day visit to Jerusalem.

Quadrilateral builds on ongoing cooperation between U.S., Israel, and UAE after the Abraham Accords last year

This QUAD grouping had decided to establish an international forum for economic cooperation and discussed possibilities for joint infrastructure projects expanding economic and political cooperation in the Middle East and Asia.

WHO releases Global TB Report 2021

World Health Organization (WHO) has released its annual Global tuberculosis (TB) report 2021 to provide a comprehensive and up-to-date assessment of the TB epidemic at global, regional and country levels.

The report also mentioned India as the worst-hit country in TB elimination, where the detection of new TB cases saw a huge impact in 2020.

Key findings:

  • Number of people dying from TB increased in 2020 due to COVID-19.
  • India is among top 30 countries with the highest TB burden.
  • Very few people were diagnosed, treated, or provided with TB preventive treatment in 2020 compared with 2019.
CII organizes ‘Future Tech 2021’ conference

Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) has organized an International Conference and Exhibition on Digital technologies, ‘Future Tech 2021- a Journey of digital transformation to technology adoption and acceleration’ from October 19 to 27, 2021. The inaugural session was virtually attended by Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Minister of State in the Ministry of Electronics & IT, Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship.

The theme of Future Tech 2021: Driving technologies for building the future, we all can trust. The theme will have 5 pillars: Strategy, Growth, Resilience, Inclusiveness, and Trust.

PM Modi inaugurates Kushinagar International Airport in UP

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 20, 2021, inaugurated the Kushinagar international airport, which is an endeavour to connect Buddhist pilgrimage sites around the world as well as facilitate the travel of pilgrims to the final resting place of Lord Buddha.

The airport has been built at an estimated cost of Rs 260 crore, the new international airport is part of the Modi government’s endeavour to link Buddhist pilgrimage sites around the world, a PTI report said.

It will facilitate domestic & international pilgrims to visit the Mahaparinirvana sthal of Lord Buddha in Kushinagar.

Kushinagar is the final resting place of Gautama Buddha, where he attained Mahaparinirvana after his death. The airport will help in boosting tourism on the Buddhist circuit. The first international flight at the Kushinagar International Airport landed from Colombo, Sri Lanka, carrying Srilankan delegation of over a hundred Buddhist Monks & dignitaries. Now the number of airports handling passenger flights in Uttar Pradesh has increased to 9.

Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh launches improved Air Quality Early Warning System for Delhi-NCR

Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) Science & Technology; Minister of State (Independent Charge) Earth Sciences; MoS PMO, Personnel, Public Grievances, Pensions, Atomic Energy and Space, Dr. Jitendra Singh has launched Air Quality Early Warning System (AQEWS) on the occasion of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav week organized by the Ministry of Earth Sciences.

The institute has also developed a dedicated website for DSS, to deliver quantitative information about the contribution of emissions from Delhi and surrounding districts to the air quality. 

The website is designed to deliver quantitative information about:

a) The contribution of emissions from Delhi and the surrounding 19 districts to the air quality in Delhi, 

b) The contribution of emissions from 8 different sectors in Delhi their contribution,

c) The contribution from biomass-burning activities in the neighboring states to the degradation of air quality in Delhi,

d) The possible quantitative effects of interventions on the forecast air-quality event in Delhi. All this information would assist in managing the air quality in a timely manner.  

Ecuador declares state of emergency over a crime wave

Ecuador, the South American country, has declared a state of emergency over the crime wave. Ecuador’s President Guillermo Lasso announced a 60-day state of emergency amidst a rise in violent drug crimes.

President Lasso has pointed to drug trafficking and consumption as the main drivers behind an increase in murders, home burglary, thefts of vehicles and goods, and muggings.

Speaking in a televised address, President Lasso said that under the emergency measures, the armed forces and police would carry out “arms checks, inspections, 24-hour patrols, and drug searches, among other actions”.

NPCI launches card tokenization platform ‘NTS’

The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has launched the NPCI Tokenization system (NTS) to further enhance the safety of customers and provide a seamless shopping experience to consumers.

The NPCI Tokenization System (NTS) will support the tokenization of RuPay cards to further enhance the safety of customers and provide a seamless shopping experience to consumers, NPCI stated in a press release issued on October 20, 2021.

NPCI’s Token Reference On File(TROF) service will help RuPay cardholders, to maintain the security of their financial data. With NTS, acquiring Banks, Aggregators, Merchants & others can get themselves certified with NPCI & can play the role of Token Requestor to help save the Token reference number (Token Reference On File) against all card numbers saved.

NABSanrakshan, govt sign trust deed for Credit Guarantee Fund Trust for FPOs

NABSanrakshan Trustee Pvt Ltd (NTPL), a subsidiary of Nabard, and the Government of India signed a trust deed for the Rs 1,000 crore of the Credit Guarantee Fund Trust for Farmers Producer Organisations (CGFTFPO).

The fund has been launched under the trusteeship of NABSanrakshan Trustee Pvt Ltd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of NABARD. For this, NABSanrakshan has signed a trust deed with the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare. The Trust has been registered in Mumbai.

The CGFTFPO is only the second such trust formed in the agriculture and allied sector for providing credit guarantees.

A Balasubramanian appointed as Chairman of AMFI

A Balasubramanian, the managing director, and chief executive officer of Aditya Birla Sunlife Mutual Funds, was on October 18 elected as the chairman of the Association of Mutual Funds in India (AMFI). He replaces Nilesh Shah, the Managing Director of Kotak Mutual Fund. Balasubramanian is Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Aditya Birla Sun Life Asset Management.

Meanwhile, Radhika Gupta, the MD, and CEO of Edelweiss AMC have been appointed as vice-chair of AMFI.

World-acclaimed Kung Fu Nuns win UNESCO’s Martial Arts Education Prize 2021

The world-renowned Kung Fu Nuns of the Drukpa order of Buddhism have won the prestigious Martial Arts Education Prize 2021 from the UNESCO International Centre for Martial Arts for their brave acts of service. The prize recognizes the Kung Fu Nuns’ heroic acts of service and championing gender equality across the Himalayas.

The Nuns empower young girls through martial arts, to defend themselves, build confidence, and take on leadership roles in their communities.

The award has been launched by UNESCO ICM (International Centre of Martial Arts for Youth Development and Engagement), to collect and promote good practices of martial arts education(MA Edu.)

National Police Commemoration Day: 21 October

In India, Police Commemoration Day is observed on October 21 every year. The day is marked to remember and honour the brave policemen who have laid down their lives in the line of duty. The day remembers the sacrifices of ten policemen who breathed their last in Chinese firing in 1959. On October 21, 1959, Chinese troops opened fire and threw grenades at twenty Indian soldiers in Ladakh.  Since that day, 21 October has been observed as Police Commemoration Day in honour of the martyrs.
